Those gazelles, whose eyelids have kept you sleepless,
have tears with which their eyes watered the dune's bān trees.
فللهso, to God! قلبٌa heart ليسdoes not يخبوdie down ضرامهُits blaze
فيطفاand thus be quenched وعينand an eye لاnot تجفُّdry up شؤونهاits tear ducts
By God, a heart whose blaze will never dwindle
and be quenched—and an eye whose tear ducts never dry!
خليليَّmy two friends ذاthis is الواديthe valley فأينso where ظباؤهُits gazelles

My two friends, here is the valley—but where are its gazelles?
And those are Najd's hills—but where are their dwellers?
وماand ... not الحبُّlove إلاَّexcept سكرةٌan intoxication بيin me خمارهاits hangover
بسربِfor a herd مهىof oryx شطَّتthey went far away وعنديand with me شجونهاsorrows for them
Love is only a drunkenness whose hangover I bear,
for a herd of oryx gone far away, while my sorrows for them remain.
غداdeparted بفؤاديwith my heart ساعةَat the hour البينof parting غيدهاtheir slender beauties
وأسهرَand kept awake عينيmy eye ليلةon the night الجزعِof anguish عينهاtheir wide-eyed beauties
Their slender beauties carried off my heart at the hour of parting,
and their wide-eyed ones kept my eyes awake on the night of anguish.
وماand ... not ليI have يدٌany power بالغيدِover the beauties والبيدِand the deserts هذهِthese
غداhas become بينهاtheir parting برحاًtorment وهاتيكand those بينهاtheir intervening distance
I am powerless against beauties and deserts: these
now torment me with parting, those with their intervening distance.
فدرٌّso, pearls وأصدافُand the shells الخدودof cheeks تصونهُprotect it
وبحرُand a sea سرابٍof mirage والمطيُّand the riding-camels سفينهاare its ships
For there are pearls, guarded by the shells of cheeks,
and a sea of mirage, with riding-camels as its ships.
عدمتُmay I be deprived of الرياحthe winds الهيفthe slender-waisted maidens مرّتpassed بهاby them الصّباthe east breeze
فماستso swayed أعاليهاtheir upper bodies ولانتand grew supple متونهاtheir backs
May I be rid of the winds! The east breeze passed the slender maidens,
so their upper bodies swayed, and their backs grew supple.

فلمso ... did not يعدهاpass her by لونُthe color القناةof the spear-shaft ولينهاand its suppleness
And a dusky maiden whose figure bends with youth's intoxication:
she lacks neither the spear-shaft's hue nor its suppleness.

She draws near, yet between us, through her boredom,
lies a gulf whose remoteness brings the fickle one no closer.
يعزُّis difficult انتصافيmy obtaining redress منagainst قساوةthe hardness قلبهاof her heart
إذاwhen كانis قلبيmy heart المستهامlove-crazed يعينهاhelps her
It is hard for me to gain redress for her heart's cruelty
when my own love-crazed heart comes to her aid.
وماand ... not ليَI have إلاَّexcept صبوةٌan infatuation جاهليةsteeped in ignorance
فحطّةso, the resting place رشديof my good sense فيكconcerning you لاnot استبينهاI discern it
I have nothing but an infatuation steeped in ignorance;
so I see no resting place for my good sense where you are concerned.

وأزجرand I drive away عنكfrom you النفسthe soul والوجدwhile passion دينهاis its creed
I reproach my heart over you, though longing is its law,
and drive my soul away from you, though passion is its creed.

And on many a morning—how many mornings and joys
I wish, though I treasure them, could be that one!—

I was alone with her, the wine-cup's veil cast aside,
while dark clouds had veiled the face of the sky.

And her left hand lay between my side and the bedding,
and her right hand lay above my wildly fluttering heart.

وياand oh! لكfor you خمراًa wine لاmay ... not ذوىwither زرجونهاits vine
I sipped with her the two wines: saliva and grape-wine.
And oh, what a wine—may its vine never wither!

They rose like stars, traveling with the darkness;
when they drew near, their companion complained of no sorrow.

And bubbles circled around them, as though
Ibn Ayyub had appeared, and their eyes overflowed.
