May God curse August whenever it returns as a month,

and afflict it with the scorching winds it holds.

Each day in it brings painful torment,

yet it saves us from the painful torment.

What a month has come—with no spreading

shade over us, nor a gentle breeze!

It has dragged on: it is sorrow and a treasure—so how

like its closing days are to the breast of one stifling grief!

Fasting in it was obligatory by sacred law, so we fasted

in an inferno, hoping for nearness to Hell.

Its stay was not gracious, but

we honored it for the sake of the noble station.
