وشوقٌand longing ولكنَّbut المزارthe destination بعيدُdistant
And yearning—but how far from you is Zarud!
Longing, yet where are you from me, companion?
And longing—but the destination is far away.
Yearning, though the gravesite is far.

Yes, it is a soul that yearns for youth;
Yes, it is a soul that longs for the boy,
And alas, life's past never returns.
Alas! The life of the past shall not return.

زميلa companion إلىtoward سكانهاits dwellers ووحيدand a solitary one
It dwells in hardship, and longing has within the breast
It dwells in misery, and solitude is a friend
A companion drawn toward its dwellers, yet alone.
To yearning in the barren desert.
مرادa desired place وماand no فيهin it لطرفكfor your gaze مسرحroom to roam

A desired place, yet no room there for your gaze to roam;
The object of your gaze has no theater here,
And water—but no way to come and drink of it.
Water, but no roses lead to it.

And in tears after parting there is something to relieve thirst;
After separation, tears are of no use to echo,
Indeed, the lovers' fire never dies.
Nay, the fires of lovers have no end.

My pallor betrays what I conceal,
My pallor betrays whom I conceal,
And my eyelid speaks plainly, while my tongue is sluggish.
And my eyelids and tongue are languid.

A case of longing, with sickness as its evidence,
Evidence of passion’s illness,
And a claim of passion, with tears as witnesses.
And love’s claim—tears bear witness.

And I have a heart in the sanctuary, its return far off;
My heart is far, I ask the living about it,
I ask the tribe about it, though it is lost.
And it is gone.

The spoil of India's swords—which are glances—
Plunder of Indian swords, yet it looks on,
And the plunder of al-Khatt's spears—which are slender forms.
Prey of spears from Khatt, yet it is firm.

When the east wind speaks of its branches,
When the morning breeze speaks of its branches,
Then longing draws from it treasures both new and inherited.
Passion has from it a gentle caress and a soft touch.

بأنَّthat قتيلَone slain by الغانياتthe beauties شهيدa martyr
My two friends, on the day at the bend, did you know
My friend, the day of farewell—did you know
That one slain by beauties is a martyr?
That the slain of songs is a martyr?

That morning, the fair women's glances were keen white swords,
Tomorrow the white cheeks are white swords,
And the dark, languid eyelids were lions.
And the languid black eyelids, black.

Oryxes, heavy-haunched, with burdened steps,
Restless pacing of the eyelids,
Slim of waist, slender of frame, supple.
Dragging steps, stirring mantles, swaying bodies.

So beauty has from them freshness and youth,
For beauty they have radiance and youth,
And sorrow has from us tears and cheeks.
While for our sorrow—tears and cheeks.

So do not ask me, you two, for more ardent longing;
So ask not from me more freshness,
For the agony of my longing can grow no greater.
For the salvation of my longing has no increase.

Every companion has changed under love's rule;
Every companion has changed in the ruling of love,
So too the nights: they keep no pledges.
Such are the nights, they have no covenants.

So, since the travelers left, sleep and I are estranged;
After the reproachers, estrangement for the eye,
And since parting, the dream-vision turns away.
And for the phantom, after separation, repulsions.

So, O my liver, where is respite from love's anguish?
Oh my liver! Where is tranquility from passion?
And O eyelid of my eye, how far from you is slumber!
Oh my eye! Where are your tears?

The lightning of the Hijaz keeps me awake whenever
The Hijazi lightning keeps me awake
It travels by night, while sleep-stealing eyes lie asleep.
Whenever it flows, while sleepy eyes slumber.

It leads the rain, bright of countenance and smiling,
It makes the threads of my tears flow with a name
Like Salah al-Din's face when he gives generously.
Like the face of Saladin in his generosity.
