أوand do...? ماnot ترىyou see حسنَthe beauty الغديرَof the pool وقدand already جلاhas revealed
عطفيهِits two flanks فيin ثوبِthe robe الأصيلof late afternoon الوارسِsaffron-hued
And do you not see the pool's beauty, as it has bared
Or do you not see the beauty of the pond when it is clear,
its two flanks in the saffron-hued robe of late afternoon?
Its banks in the garb of authentic white cloth.
شبَّkindled الشُّعاعُthe radiance علىon صحيفةthe page مائةa hundred; likely 'its water' here
ناراًa fire فاطمعُand so tempted فيهtoward it كفَّthe hand القابسof one seeking a flame
The radiance kindled on the page of its water
The rays shine on the page of bright silver,
a fire, luring toward it the hand of one seeking a flame.
Like fire, so the palm of the kindler hopes for it.
ولقدand indeed لعمريby my life جعّدتهُcurled it يدُthe hand الصّباof the east wind
لوif only كانit were يثبتُto remain firm فيin يمينِthe right hand اللامسof the toucher
And indeed, by my life, the east wind's hand has curled it—
By my life, the morning breeze wrinkled it,
if only it would stay in the toucher's right hand!
If it would stay still in the hand of the toucher.
والسابحُand the swimmer الملقيwho casts علىupon ضوءِthe light الضُّحىof midmorning
منْfrom شعرهِhis hair جنحَa swath الظلامِof darkness الدامسpitch-black
And the swimmer, casting upon the light of midmorning
And the swimmer throwing himself on the light of the morning,
from his hair a swath of pitch-black darkness,
From his hair the wings of the penetrating darkness.
لماwhen رأىhe saw زردَthe mail-rings الحبابِof the bubbles وقدand already رمىhe shot
بجفونهِwith his eyelids قلبِthe heart المحبِّof the lover البائسhapless
when he saw the bubbles' mail-rings, having already shot at
When he saw the emerald of loved ones and it cast
the hapless lover's heart with his eyelids—
With its eyelids the heart of the miserable lover.
وأطلَّand peered down غصنُa branch البانِof the bān tree ينظرgazing at قدّهُhis figure
فاهتزَّand so quivered منfrom حسدٍenvy كأسمرَlike a brown spear مائسswaying
while a bān-tree branch peered down, gazing at his figure,
And the branch of acacia looked at its stature,
then quivered with envy like a swaying brown spear,
So it shook from envy like a black doe.
والبرقُand the lightning يبسمُsmiles كالحسامِlike a keen sword يشامbeing drawn فيamid
مثلthe likeness العجاجِof swirling dust منof الغمامِthe clouds العابسscowling
and lightning smiles like a keen sword drawn amid
And the lightning smiles like a sword being drawn in
dust-like banks of scowling cloud—
The likes of stormy clouds of the frowning sky.
خافَhe feared الطّلابَpursuit فرامَand so sought منهُfrom it وقايةًprotection
كالدرعِlike a coat of mail فاضflowed علىover معاطفِthe flanks لابسof a wearer
feared pursuit and sought from it protection,
It feared the students so it fled from it as protection,
like chain mail flowing over a wearer's flanks.
Like a coat overflowing on the garments of the wearer.
