وأهيفand a slender one القدّfigure حيَّانيgreeted me بكأسِwith a cup of طلاwine
وأهيف القدّ حيَّاني بكأسِ طلا
كالشمسlike the sun يحملهاhe carries it بدرُfull moon الدجىthe darkness الساريjourneying by night
كالشمس يحملها بدرُ الدجى الساري
And a man of slender figure greeted me with a cup of wine,
He offers me a cup brimming with wine
Like the sun, borne by the full moon journeying through the darkness.
Like the moon carrying the wandering full moon
فقلتُso I said لمَّاwhen رأيتُI saw الكأسَthe cup فيin يدهِhis hand
فقلتُ لمَّا رأيتُ الكأسَ في يدهِ
قدindeed أمكنbecame possible الجمعُthe combining بينbetween الماءِthe water والنارِand the fire
قد أمكن الجمعُ بين الماءِ والنارِ
So I said, when I saw the cup in his hand:
When I saw the cup in his hand, I said
“Indeed, water and fire can be brought together.”
It made possible to bring together water and fire
