منْof مقلةٍan eye عبرىtearful وجسمٍand a body ناحلِwasted
Among the departing companions' camel-litters, how many
How many sighs are there between the fleeting mixture
tearful eyes and wasted bodies,
Of a tearful gaze and a fading body

and lovesick men whose last remnant of life has departed,
And a longing soul that has departed
yet who remain—marvel at those who stay yet go!
And one who stays is amazed by the one who leaves

He would not have reproached me for longing and sorrow,
He would not have blamed in youth and in sorrow
had the reproacher's heart tasted the savor of love.
If the blamer's heart had tasted love

They departed with one free of love's care, safe in the camel-litters,
They left smoothly in howdahs, unharmed
who brings tears to a forsaken, love-maddened man in the dwellings.
While a passionate one weeps in dwellings, distressed

Alas for those cheeks, encircled
I grieve for those cheeks, adorned
by their counterparts among the slender, supple spears.
By the like of withering branches

Guarded by gleaming swords, their swaying
Protected by whiteness, and they are tables of generosity
forms are like branches among streams.
Like boughs among streams

Deadly are they—and one of love's wonders is
The deadly ones, though the wonder of love is
the slain one's anguish because of them, and the slayer's safety.
The slain's agony by them, and the killer's safety

My eye does wrong and, with its glances, gathers
I keep harvesting with glances
from them the fruits of my longing and my anguish.
From them the fruits of my youth and nightingales

جوداًas a kindness وكيفand how يكونcan there be جودُgenerosity الباخلfrom a miser
O daughter of the two moons, grant an hour's pause
A necklace of two moons, a stance of an hour
as a kindness—but how can a miser be generous?
Bountifully, but how can the miser's bounty be?

How can I reach you in the deep darkness of night,
How can I reach you in the darkness of night
when the stars of al-Khatt's brown spears never set?
With the stars of dark lines not setting?

How many a night grew long as your hair with sorrow,
How many a night has been long like your hair in sorrow
then short as my patience when your phantom came!
Shortened like my patience by the imagining connection

I complain to it of my sickness, but its heart stays silent,
I complain to it of my malady, but its heart is silent
and the speech of the swaying sash answers me.
And the speech of the flowing scarf answers me

And the horizon, fearing dawn, is not yet gray,
The horizon fears not the dawn with suspicion
nor has the dye on night's temple faded.
Nor the dying night's cheek with depletion
فيfor غيرanything other than هذاthis يعذلreproaches عاذلa reproacher
وهبيand suppose عذلتُI were reproached فأينَthen where سمعُthe hearing of القابلone who heeds
A reproacher may reproach for anything but this;
In other than this, a blamer blames
and suppose I were reproached—where is the ear that would heed?
And I was blamed, so where is the hearing of the receiver?

What have I to do with the days, which claim they are
What is it to me and to days that claim
at peace with me, yet pierce my vital parts with calamities?
To make peace with me, but fight my battles?

The world has forsaken me, yet I seek its help;
The world betrayed me, and I seek its victory
and seeking a deserter's help is hardship.
Yet seeking victory from treachery is futile

So I shall surely don a coat of mail made of fortitude,
So I will wear the armor of endurance
closely linked, mocking the archer's arrows.
To mock the arrows of critics
