    وأيسرُ ما ألقى الدموعُ السواجمُ

    The least of my suffering is that I am lost in love with him;

    the lightest thing I endure is tears pouring down.

    ويسأل عنّي قومهُ وهو عالم

    I await forgiveness from him, though the fault is his;

    he asks his people about me, though he knows.

    Must I greet the morning sorrowful while he is free of love,

    and lie awake with longing for him while he sleeps?

    فمن منصفٌ واللحظ خصم وحاكم

    His glance wrongs my heart while serving as judge;

    who, then, will do justice when the glance is adversary and judge?

    The strangest thing in love is that, at his parting, I am

    sorrowful and stricken, while he is joyful and unscathed.

    Does the slain one despair while the slayer feels safe,

    and the wronged bow low while the wrongdoer stands proud?

    O my days at the valley bend, will you return?

    And O wild-cow calf of the sandy plain, will you show mercy?

    How many a love-sick man in the camp seeks a landmark!

    Ah, how grievously the landmarks wrong us!

    The branches bend at our complaint in sympathy,

    and the doves lament us in their spreading trees.

    My two friends, have you passed the marker of the protected pasture?

    And are those the tribe's departing camel-litters, or am I mistaken?

    Dwellings where the sober-minded man pines with longing,

    and his heart is stolen there, though he is resolute.

    Whenever my eyes fail to win a glimpse of them,

    may no watcher glimpse the lightning of Mashrafi blades,

    nor may languid winds drift through them,

    nor any tender, dew-drenched bān tree sway.

    Reproach doubles my longing; reproach concerning them

    is itself infatuation, and smiling lightning makes me weep.

    O my eye, what did the lightning tell of them?

    And O my hearing, what have the reproaching women lodged in you?

    وعهدي به عهدٌ من الغيث دائم

    May God water the days of youth with pouring rain;

    my time with it was a season of ceaseless rain.

    I stood, while streaming springs flowed from my eye,

    and its pupil floated in a deep sea of tears.

    لذذت به خلساً كأني حالم

    It was only like a phantom offering a greeting;

    I savored it furtively, as though I were dreaming.

    وشأن شؤوني جلُّ ما أنا كاتم

    Leave me, you two, and do not inquire into what I have suffered;

    the state of my tear ducts is most of what I conceal.

    If those camels return bearing those who departed,

    oh, how dear their footpads and toe-tips!

    Many a companion I thanked as he approached,

    then he turned away, twisting his side, while reviling me.

    Everyone meets me scowling; yet the reverse:

    I stood before the lion, and the lion was smiling.

    Do people hate me because I surpass them

    in merit? God indeed apportions merit.

    وإلا فخانت أصغريَّ العزائم

    I am indeed one who gives a kindness its due;

    if not, may my resolves betray my heart and tongue!

    When ignorance beguiles the people's prudent man,

    I cut away the disease of ignorance with knowledge.
