وأبلغُand the most eloquent ماwhat يهدىis offered تحيةa greeting نازحِof one far away
A greeting from a lovesick lover far from his beloved;
And the most eloquent gift is the greeting of one far away.

غريبَa stranger الهوىlove بينbetween الحشىthe inner breast والجوانحand the ribs
I swear, after parting from you I have lodged
Love, a stranger, between my heart and ribs.

بعذريِwith chaste شوقٍlonging جارحٍwounding للجوارحto the limbs
Who, then, will help one sick in heart and body, afflicted
With chaste longing that wounds the limbs?

وماand not هوhe منfrom داءthe disease الغرامof passionate love بصالحat all well
He tells every visitor, ‘I am well,’
Yet he is not cured of love’s disease.
فياso, O ابنson of العلىeminence والمجدand glory والجودand generosity والقرىand hospitality
وزهرand the bright stars الدجىof night’s darkness والغادياتand the morning clouds السوافحpouring down
So, O son of eminence, glory, generosity, and hospitality,
And of night’s bright stars and the pouring morning clouds—
رحلتyou departed فوردso the draught العيشof life ليسis not بسائغat all palatable
لديّto me ووجهand the face الصبحof dawn ليسis not بواضحat all bright
You departed, so life’s draught is no longer palatable
To me, nor is dawn’s face bright.
وأعجبand the strangest شيءthing أنthat بعدكyour absence مأتمٌa mourning gathering
تزفّare escorted as brides بهِat it منّيfrom me بناتُdaughters القرايحof poetic inspiration
And the strangest thing is that your absence is a mourning gathering,
Where the daughters of inspiration are led forth from me as brides.
