وقفتُI stood علىat قبرthe grave of العزيزal-Aziz بنson of يوسفٍYusuf
وقوفthe standing of الفتيthe youth الصاديthe thirsty one علىat المنهلِthe watering place العذبِthe sweet
I stood at the grave of al-Aziz ibn Yusuf,
I stood at the grave of the dear Ibn Yusuf
As a thirsty youth stands at a sweet watering place.
Like a young man standing at a sweet spring
فلمyet I did not أقضهِrender him حقَّthe due السماحةgenerosity والندىand bounty
ولاnor حقَّthe due هاتيكَthat البشاشةِsmiling warmth والقُربِand closeness
Yet I did not do justice to his generosity and bounty,
I did not do justice to his kindness and softness
Nor to that smiling warmth and closeness.
Or his cheerfulness and intimacy
سلامٌfarewell علىto الدنياthe world الدنيةthe base بعدهafter him
فأحداثهاfor its calamities تُصميstrike dead ولذاتهاand its pleasures تُصبيbeguile
Farewell to the base world after his passing!
Peace on the lowly world after him
For its calamities strike dead, and its pleasures beguile.
Its events deafen and its pleasures make one dizzy
ولوand if كنتُI were ذاpossessed of قلبٍa heart لصدنيwould have turned me away الأسىgrief
عنfrom القلبthe heart لكنيbut I بقيتُremained بلاwithout قلبِa heart
And had I a heart, grief would have turned me away
If I had a heart, sorrow would have prevented me
From that heart—but I remained without a heart.
From the heart, but I remained without a heart
وسكنand stilled ندبيmy lament بعدafter طولthe length of جماحِهِits wild course
علىover الجائدِthe generous man الوهابِthe lavish giver والفارسand the horseman الندبthe gallant one
And what stilled my lament after its long wild course
And my elegy settled after its long fervor
For the generous, lavish giver and gallant horseman
Upon the generous, granting, and elegy-inspiring knight
يقينيmy certainty بأنthat الموتdeath للخلقfor all creatures غايةٌan end
وأنand that المناياthe allotted deaths موردُthe watering place of العجمnon-Arabs والعُربِand Arabs
Was my certainty that death is the end of all creatures,
My certainty that death is the destination of creation
And that death is the watering place of non-Arabs and Arabs.
And that demise is the place of non-Arabs and Arabs
