ولاand no عجبٌwonder كمhow often قدindeed شقيتُI suffered بصاحبٍbecause of a companion
May God [curse] a garden where I met hunger at dawn.
And no wonder—how often I have suffered because of a companion!
كأنيas though I قتيلthe slain man الطفّal-Taff منfrom آلthe family of هاشمٍHashim
وقدand had صدَّbeen barred كرهاًby force عنfrom لذيذsweet المشاربdraughts
As though I were the slain man of al-Taff, of the house of Hashim,
And had been forcibly barred from sweet draughts.
فماso not نلتI obtained فيهِin it الخبزَbread إلاَّexcept بشافعٍthrough an intercessor
ولاnor الماءَwater إلاَّexcept أنthat يكونit be بحاجبthrough a gatekeeper
So I obtained bread there only through an intercessor,
Nor water unless it came through a gatekeeper.
