إذاif كنتyou are ذاpossessed of مجدٍglory رفيعٍlofty فلاthen do not تهنbe debased
إذا كنت ذا مجدٍ رفيعٍ فلا تهن
بكبرthrough pride فربُّfor the possessor of الكبرpride سوفwill يهونbecome lowly
بكبر فربُّ الكبر سوف يهون
If you possess lofty glory, do not debase yourself
If you have lofty glory then do not grieve
Through pride, for the proud man will be brought low.
For the Greatest of the Great will soon pass
ولنand be pliant عطفَin bending جودٍof generosity إنif هززتyou are shaken فإنهُfor indeed it is the case that
ولن عطفَ جودٍ إن هززت فإنهُ
علىupon الهزِّshaking أعطافshafts الرماحof the spears تلينgrow supple
على الهزِّ أعطاف الرماح تلين
And bend generously if you are shaken, for
And if shaken by kindness, it will bend
The shafts of spears grow supple when shaken.
Spear-tips soften when shaken and sway
فإنfor indeed أعاليthe tops الدوحof the great trees تهصرهاbends them الصّباthe east wind
فإن أعالي الدوح تهصرها الصّبا
فتخضعso they bow فيin عليائهاtheir loftiness وتدينand yield
فتخضع في عليائها وتدين
For the east wind bends the tops of great trees,
For the heights of the sand-dunes, the breeze lays low
So they bow in their loftiness and yield.
Bowing them in their loftiness, making them kneel
