قم يا نديمُ إلى مباشرة الوغى

فالحربُ قائمةٌ ونحنُ هجودُ

فالحربُ قائمةٌ ونحنُ هجودُ

Rise, boon companion, and enter the fray!

Rise, O boon companion, to engage in battle.

For battle is raging while we lie asleep.

For war is underway, while we lie asleep.

والليل قد أودى وقهقه عندها

والليل قد أودى وقهقه عندها

الإبريق من طربٍ وناح العود

الإبريق من طربٍ وناح العود

Night has passed away, and at this came a peal of laughter—

And night has passed away, and at that laughed aloud

From the delighted ewer, while the oud wailed.

The pitcher in delight, while the lute wailed.

ولئن زعمت بأن ذلك باطلٌ

ولئن زعمت بأن ذلك باطلٌ

فلنا عليه أدلَّةٌ وشهود

فلنا عليه أدلَّةٌ وشهود

And if you claim that this is false,

And if indeed you claim that that is false,

We have proofs and witnesses for it:

Then we have proofs and witnesses for it.

القطر نبلٌ والغديرُ سوابغٌ

القطر نبلٌ والغديرُ سوابغٌ

والبرقُ بيضٌ والغمام بنود

والبرقُ بيضٌ والغمام بنود

The raindrops are arrows; the pool, a full coat of mail;

The rain is arrows, and the pool is coats of mail.

The lightning, bright blades; the clouds, battle-banners.

And lightning is gleaming swords, and the clouds are banners.
