    وسلَّت سيوفَ الهجر فانهزم الصّبرُ

    A slender-waisted, dusky beauty swayed her supple sides;

    and drew the swords of estrangement, putting patience to flight.

    Who can face the Khatt lances that youth has straightened,

    when magic, their burnisher, draws bright blades from them?

    I would not have obeyed the fair, full-breasted maidens,

    if beauty's rulers had any command one could defy.

    وإن تكُ عنَّا في غنى فبنا فقرُ

    A dusky-lipped beauty—if she withholds, her phantom has been generous;

    and though she has no need of us, we are full of need.

    ونضوان جسمي بالقطيعة والخصرِ

    Two things are great: my anguish at separation and her hips;

    and two are lean: my body through estrangement, and her waist.

    فمن ضربها فيجفنه ذلك الكسرِ

    She ceaselessly strikes with the sword of her glance still sheathed;

    so that break in its sheath comes from her blows.

    Had my heart not wished to match her eyelids,

    the embers within it would not have blackened like their dye.

    وإن سألت عن سلوتي فلها الأجرُ

    Tell her again, you two, of the one whom passion slew;

    and if she asks whether I have found solace, the reward is hers.

    Her face shines, making her hair seem dark,

    like faith's radiance against the pitch of unbelief.

    How often her tresses and the night concealed her visit,

    then dawn and her smile spitefully betrayed her phantom.

    He says, when I have kissed her after embracing her:

    When was a bān bough ever embraced, or the full moon kissed?

    Were union with the slender beauty not a paradise,

    the wine from her lips would not be lawful there.

    Even her words and her smile are so alike

    that even thought cannot tell which is the pearl.

    فما بال قلبي لا يفكُّ له حجرُ

    Young passion has already come of age;

    so why is the wardship over my heart not lifted?

    May the rain-cloud water the memory of days in the protected pasture,

    and fair and dusky beauties whom bright swords and tawny spears cannot match.

    A time when love led astray those whom reason had guided,

    and there union revived those whom estrangement had slain.

    and for them four red streams of my tears overflowed.

    And I recall how, through Zaynab's trailing skirts,

    its pools were blue and its dunes green,

    its soil strutted in the jewels of leafy groves,

    though neither al-Husayn's son nor the rain had watered it.
