ليلةٌ خفَّفت من الهمّ عنَّا

ليلةٌ خفَّفت من الهمّ عنَّا

بثقيلٍ مستحسنٍ وخفيفِ

بثقيلٍ مستحسنٍ وخفيفِ

A night that eased some of our sorrow

A night that lightened our cares for us

with a pleasing heavy rhythm and a light one.

With pleasant heaviness and lightness

عفّ عنا الزمان فيها وما زا

عفّ عنا الزمان فيها وما زا

ل عنيفاً لولا لقاء العنيف

ل عنيفاً لولا لقاء العنيف

Time spared us that night; it would have remained

Time forgave us in it and did not become

harsh, but for meeting al-ʿAnīf:

Violent except for the meeting of the violent

بحر علمٍ ما شأنه عارض الجزر

بحر علمٍ ما شأنه عارض الجزر

وبدرٌ ما شابه بكسوف

وبدرٌ ما شابه بكسوف

a sea of knowledge whose nature knows no passing ebb,

A sea of knowledge, its condition is high tide

and a full moon never marred by eclipse.

And a full moon not marred by eclipse

ولنا من معاطف الغيد واللح

ولنا من معاطف الغيد واللح

ظ رماحٌ محميَّة بسيوف

ظ رماحٌ محميَّة بسيوف

And from the graceful women's swaying forms and glances,

And we have coats of mail and armor

we have spears protected by swords.

With protected spears and swords

لو لقينا بها العِدى لغنينا

لو لقينا بها العِدى لغنينا

عن ظبى الهند والرّماح الهيف

عن ظبى الهند والرّماح الهيف

If we met our foes with them, we would have no need

If we met the enemies we would suffice

of India's blades and slender spears.

Without the antelope of India or light spears

وهزمنا بها الألوف كما في ا

وهزمنا بها الألوف كما في ا

مال من شأنهنَّ هزم الألوف

مال من شأنهنَّ هزم الألوف

And with them we would rout thousands, as in

And we would defeat thousands with them, as is

hopes whose nature is to rout thousands.

Customary for them to defeat thousands
