A heart throbs at the memory of the protected abode after separation.

And tears in love have done what they must.

I wept on the day of parting from the clan at tidings

inscribed by a glance upon the pages of separation.

    البَّ لمّا خلا من أهله اللّبيب

    A passion from which tears fell in anguish and burning grief;

the wise man lingered when it lay empty of its people.

Let people not marvel at my abasement and their glory:

love's rule over its children is wondrous throughout.

He sways to turn my heart from its resolve,

and the sheen and cool freshness of his teeth began to wrong my heart.

Late at night, lightning learned from their mouths,

so it spent the night smiling at my anguish while I sobbed.

Our beloveds, we have not sought patience since you left,

nor found solace, while youth's garments are still new.

Hopes taste sweet to me, though they are false,

and in tales of hopes, falsehood becomes lovely.

You departed; there is no hope of repose at your side,

no indeed, nor any desire for life after you.

Separation grew dark, and so the longings shone clear,

and in the darkness of nights, the bright stars appear.

You laughed at my weeping on the day you parted,

as daisies laugh when clouds weep for them.

Hopes bring near what, of you, despair keeps distant

from us; contentment revives what anger destroys [reading uncertain].

Do not hasten a parting before its time:

time must reclaim what it gives.

Were it not for the slain, we would not have been barred from your affection.

Indeed, affection is not something to be seized by force.

You punished us with your abandonment, though we had no fault

but love; from you, it is to you we flee.

The east wind's breeze travelled by night, bringing your greeting,

late at night, while the tears' whole course was a trot.

So the drinkers ascribed its fragrance to the tawny wine,

ignorantly; to my mind, it spent the night claiming kinship with you.

When it spoke, wafting fragrance, of your forms,

they thought it the words of boughs and sand dunes.

A subtle gesture, and the bān-tree understands it

as coming from you; rapture has set its limbs swaying.

And the water is silver, and the cup its jewel,

and the wine is raw gold, with bubbles of pearl.

Red—they never sought refuge in water when it overflowed

without already believing it to be flame.

It sent greetings to a house where you have settled,

for the full moon's halo stands near it in glory.

    Every misfortune tossed me towards it;

I swear, misfortunes have treated me well there.

The deserts and mounts are mine if I wish to depart,

and if I stay, I have Sayf al-Din and letters.
