ياO منyou who بداappeared ورناand gazed فلاحso shone
البدرthe full moon ليfor me ورناand gazed الغزالthe gazelle
O you who appeared and gazed—then there shone
O you who appeared and gazed—so shone
the full moon before me, and the gazelle gazed.
The full moon for me, and the gazelle gazed.
منwho ذاthis one يقيسكcompares you بالهلالto the crescent
ونقصهِand its incompleteness ولكand you have الكمالperfection
Who could ever compare you to the crescent,
Who would compare you to the crescent
when it is imperfect and perfection is yours?
And its incompleteness, when perfection is yours?
أمor منwho يقولsays الشمسُthe sun
مثلكlike you بهجةًin radiance ولهاand it has زوالa setting
Or who could say the sun
Or who says the sun
equals you in splendor, when it must pass away?
Is like you in radiance, though it sets?
خالفتهاyou differed from it وخلفتهاand left it behind
أفقاًin horizon وأمَّركand made you sovereign الدلالcoquetry
You differed from her and left her behind
You differed from it and left it behind
upon the horizon, while coy grace crowned you sovereign.
In your horizon, and coquetry has made you sovereign.
فالشرقfor the east مطلعهاits rising-place وأنتand you
الشمسthe sun مطلعكyour rising-place الشمالthe north
For the east is where she rises, while you—
For the east is its rising-place, and you—
the sun—rise from the north.
The sun—have the north as your rising-place.
