O time that once was at al-Khayf, when we were there!

Longing dealt harshly with the tormented lover.

Where is Lubna, youth's sister—and what

pleasure has one who has parted from youth and Lubna?

I wish for those radiant nights,

and all a lover can do is wish.

How often we plucked dark lips, dusky-red,

    and clasped supple forms, slender-waisted!

And afterward we reproached the days, yet they

only grow in hatred and rancor against us.

O daughter of al-Amiri, what fault do people find

in a lover when they are told he yearns?

And they spread word that I had gone mad for Layla,

and yes, a lover has gone mad for his Layla.

What is it to them that I have been absorbed in a carefree one,

untroubled at heart, or have kept vigil for a drowsy woman?

I weep for one harder of heart than stone,

with tears, my eyelids wetter than rain,

following love's custom, even if I have

defied what love prescribed and ordained.

You resemble neither the oryx in gaze nor the bough

in stature—no, nor the full moon in beauty.

You are more languid of glance and more slender of form,

and more radiant of face, stirring longing, and loftier.

The boughs envied your figure; and when

you departed, they appeared dancing and swaying.

And the doves claimed my passion; but when

parting truly drew near, I wept while they sang.

So deem the breeze's messenger, even if

it brings word, miserly and grudging with your fragrance.

And end the phantom's habitual visits: never does

a late-night hour send it without renewing weakness.

Memories never cease stirring in the inward depths

    yearning for union and sorrow.
