توقَّ حدود البغي يومَ تنازعٍ

توقَّ حدود البغي يومَ تنازعٍ

وكنْ ذا اقتصادٍ حين ترضى وتسخطُ

وكنْ ذا اقتصادٍ حين ترضى وتسخطُ

Beware of crossing into injustice on a day of dispute.

Curb the limits of injustice on the day of conflict

And be moderate when you are pleased and when you are angry.

Be moderate when you are content and discontent

ولا تحقرنْ شيئاً وإن قلَّ قدرهُ

ولا تحقرنْ شيئاً وإن قلَّ قدرهُ

فإن ثمين الدرّ بالسّلك يضبط

فإن ثمين الدرّ بالسّلك يضبط

And never scorn anything, even if its worth is slight.

Do not despise anything, even if its value is little

For precious pearls are held fast by a thread.

For gems of great price are threaded on a string

ونفسك فاحذرها ولا تعطها هوىً

ونفسك فاحذرها ولا تعطها هوىً

هوى النفس في الدنيا عدوٌ مسلّط

هوى النفس في الدنيا عدوٌ مسلّط

And beware of your own soul, and do not indulge its desire.

And beware your soul, do not let it have its whim

The soul's desire in this world is an enemy that holds sway.

The whim of the soul in this world is a loose enemy
