بمby what يجلَis revealed خطُّthe line عذارهِof his cheek-down وبنانهِand his fingertips
بم يجلَ خطُّ عذارهِ وبنانهِ
إلاexcept that حسبتُI thought عذارهُhis cheek-down منfrom خظّهِunclear; perhaps his handwriting
إلا حسبتُ عذارهُ من خظّهِ
By what is the line of his cheek-down and fingertips revealed?
With what can the line of his cheek and his beauty be likened,
Except that I thought his cheek-down came from his [handwriting?].
Except I likened the line of his cheek to his writing,
كتبwrote الملاحةloveliness فيupon صحيفةthe page خدّهِof his cheek
كتب الملاحة في صحيفة خدّهِ
قلمthe pen الجمالof beauty فحالهthus his state منfrom نقطهِits dots
قلم الجمال فحاله من نقطهِ
Loveliness was written upon the page of his cheek
The piloting was written on the page of his cheek,
by beauty’s pen; thus his appearance comes from its dots.
The pen of beauty so its condition was from its dot,
وأغرand a radiant one يمضيtakes effect فيupon المتيَّمthe love-stricken فعلهhis action
وأغر يمضي في المتيَّم فعله
أبداًalways ولاand does not يجزيrepay المحبَّthe lover بشرطهِaccording to his terms
أبداً ولا يجزي المحبَّ بشرطهِ
And a radiant one whose action takes effect upon the love-stricken,
And the full moon passes in the desperate his action,
always, yet who does not repay the lover according to his terms,
Everlastingly and the lover is not rewarded for his condition,
يبريtrims اليراعَthe reed pen بأنملٍwith fingertips موموقةٍbeloved
يبري اليراعَ بأنملٍ موموقةٍ
خصَّتsingled out فؤادthe heart المستهامof the lovesick بقطّهِfor his cutting
خصَّت فؤاد المستهام بقطّهِ
trims the reed pen with beloved fingertips
It captivates the minds with fingertips dyed,
that singled out the lovesick heart for his cutting.
Specifying the heart of the impassioned with its fragments.
