Is this praise from your words, or magic?

And what you have made your own—words of verse, or pearls?

And its sheet is nothing but morning, and its inscription

is darkness; those letters are radiant stars.

Its meanings almost melt in their delicacy,

and water and wine drip from their folds.

Were a dead man called in the soil with its like,

he would rise to life from his folded shrouds.

Sorrow's night grew long for me, and then it was as though

dawn broke from it, or the full moon rose.

And never before it had I seen a strand without a price,

nor a lovely maiden given away without a bridal dower.

Words withdrew from me when I sought them,

though once poetry was the least of the bonds I could claim.

    فويلاهُ حتى منهمُ النَّظم والنثر

    I used to blame the miserly by nature;

alas, even verse and prose are among them.

    My patience has already betrayed me, though parting is not yet at hand;

so glory has not stood in for me, since gratitude has failed me.

And if I fail to water a dwelling where I stayed with tears

that pour down as rain, may rain never bless me.

And how welcome the age that first brought joy,

then soured it on returning—and how unwelcome the age!

Oh, would that I knew: does heartache linger with you?

Far be it from you to forget when Egypt lies far away.

I hope for a faithfulness of which you are worthy,

and fear an age whose traits include treachery.

God help me with a heart whose turmoil lasts so long,

which you and patience bid farewell to at one station.

Abu Hasan, you are nothing but a raincloud,

whose lightning flashes in every land, with rain in each.

So set aside talk of the miserly, for these are

    false reports that experience discredits.

    A year together, with you never absent, is an hour;

an hour apart, when I cannot see you, is a lifetime.

And Ahnaf is nothing but your deliberation and wisdom,

and Hatim nothing but the copious dew of your palm.

Not every runner is truly foremost,

nor is every night traveler in the heart of darkness a full moon.

Be absent, then, certain that your person remains present,

abiding, while my heart journeys with your baggage.

Blessed is Nasr in you, a refined son,

whose thoughts gain victory in every difficulty.

Steadfast under time's warfare against its people,

his swords are pens, not sharp, severing blades.

I see you, though between us lie the blue-eyed foe,

the pale, dusty deserts, and the green sea-depths.

    Not everyone granted the vizierate is noble;

have you not seen that brass resembles raw gold?
