ياO حبَّذاhow lovely زمنُthe time of الوصالunion آيبِreturning
وتألّفand coming together الأحبابloved ones بعدafter تجانبِestrangement
Oh, how lovely is the returning time of union,
Oh how I wish for the days of reunion to return
And loved ones' coming together after estrangement!
And for estranged loved ones to reunite
وتبتسمُand smile الأيامthe days بعدafter تجهُّمٍscowling
وتثبتand grow steady الأحداثevents بعدafter تواثبleaping about
And the days smile after scowling,
For days to smile again after frowning
And events grow steady after leaping about.
And events to stabilize after wavering
عادreturned الزمانtime كماas عهدتُI once knew إلىto الرضاgoodwill
وأزالand removed بالإعتابby making amends عتبَthe reproach of العاتبِthe reproacher
Time has returned to goodwill, as I once knew it,
Time has returned as I knew it would, to acceptance
And, by making amends, removed the reproacher's reproach.
And with reproach has removed the reproacher's blame
وصفتْand grew clear مواردthe springs of عيشتيmy life وحلتand grew sweet بهاwithin them
بعدafter الترنُّقmurkiness سائغاتُpleasant draughts from مشاربيmy drinking places
And the springs of my life cleared, and within them grew sweet
The streams of my life have been sweetened
After their murkiness, the pleasant draughts from my drinking places.
Flowing easily after turbidity
فركضتُso I spurred طرفthe steed of اللهوmerriment غيرwithout مفكّرٍthinking
وسرحتand I let roam فيin روضthe meadow of السرورjoy ركائبيmy mounts
So I spurred the steed of merriment without thinking,
So I galloped freely without a care
And let my mounts roam in the meadow of joy.
Roaming in meadows of joy on my steed

مصراًEgypt نجائبُthe noble mounts of ذيone with فؤادٍa heart واجبِpounding
After Syria grew confining, and set their course
After Sham squeezed me out and I intended
For Egypt the noble mounts of one with a pounding heart.
To head for Egypt, goals of the dutiful heart
وتبرحتْand emerged غيدُthe slender maidens of المنىhope وتأرَّجتْand wafted fragrance
ريحُthe breeze of الغنىwealth وافترَّand opened in a smile ثغرُthe mouth of مآربيmy desires
And hope's slender maidens emerged, and fragrance was wafted
The pleasures of wishes have spread their fragrance
By the breeze of wealth, and my desires' mouth opened in a smile.
And the scent of contentment has emanated, relaxing my frown
هيit is عادةthe custom of الأيَّامthe days تمنعthey withhold جانباًone side
وتبيحand grant access للمنوعto the withholding one أمنعthe most impregnable جانبِside
Such is the way of days: they bar one side,
Such is the way of days, blocking one side
And open the most impregnable side to one who withholds.
And permitting the banned on the banned side
والدهرand time ليسare not بلازبlasting حدثانهُits misfortunes
فيهwithin it كماjust as ليسis not السُّرورjoy بلازبِlasting
And time's misfortunes do not last
Time's events are not jesting in their overflow
Within it, just as joy does not last.
Just as happiness itself is no jester
وتنقُّلُand the shifting of الأحوالfortunes فيin أحوالهits states
ماnot زلتُI have ceased أحسبهاI reckon them أناملthe fingertips of حاسبِone who counts
And the shifting fortunes in its changing states—
Circumstances keep changing in its circumstances
I have always reckoned them the fingertips of one who counts.
I still think of them as a calculator's fingers
فلذاكso for that reason لمdid not أفرحI rejoice بيومٍat a day مذهبٍgilded
فيهwithin it ولمand did not أترحI grieve لضيقِat the narrowness of مذاهبيmy paths
Thus I did not rejoice at a gilded day
And so I never rejoiced in a passing day
Within it, nor grieve when my paths grew narrow.
Nor fretted at the narrowness of my paths
