Greet the supple-necked gazelles at al-ʿAqīq,
The gazelle grazes in the agate meadow
whose figures put the boughs of the dunes to shame;
Exposing the tender branches of an-Naqa

languid-eyed, yet deadly in their glances,
With languid and deadly eyes
with cheeks made crimson by modesty.
And cheeks blushed red by shame

White-necked and black-lidded, they were called
Her white complexion and black eyeliner she was named
'black ones' the morning they pounced like lions.
Black in the morning and confirmed black

Ah, what glances are theirs! Their magic
Oh how charming are her glances
strikes proud men in battle.
That strike men down in battle

And what waists—my sickness comes from their frailty—
And shapely waists made slender by her sickness
and what boughs that have brought forth breasts!
And branches she revealed as breasts

And that enchanter of glances: never did I ask him for
The charming glances I asked of him
union without his granting me rejection.
Only distance did he grant

He is beyond reach, though near in my esteem;
He keeps away the attainment when he draws near in pride
have you ever seen one so near, yet so far?
Did you ever see a near one far?

I ask him for kindness; he turns his side away,
I ask his compassion but he recoils
and I seek generosity; he twists his neck aside.
And I request his generosity but he twists his hand

His glance's edge is feared within his eyelid,
He fears the edge of his glance in his eyelid
and a sword's edge is feared even sheathed.
As the sword fears its sharpened edge

He repeated the haughtiness he had shown; may I never
He repeats the confusion he showed
lose that one who begins and repeats!
And I cease not from that first repeater

كثيبَ الرمل والأملودا
The swell of his hips, with his supple figure, puts to shame
The wave of his rejection exposes with its constant flow
the sand dune and the tender bough.
A sandy dune and hopes cut down

No sooner did I string his pearls as a necklace
but my tears remained scattered.
Than my tears remained streaming

I grew accustomed to longing beneath love's sway,
I forgot with passion the rule of love
while he spent the night shunning me, fleeing far.
And he became estranged and remote

The fragrance of nadd perfume wafts from his sleeves—
The blossoming of twigs scatters from his land
one whose beauty you will find without rival.
Where you see not his beauty thornless

My patience departed the day their pale camels were bridled,
My patience left me the day their caravan loaded
and my eye bade farewell to sleep.
And my eyelid bid farewell to shutting

and will the days of old come back?
And former days return

The recurring showers of my tears kept their pledge,
My tears' pact with them has broken
but its gazelles broke their covenants.
And their covenants are torn

The dwellings of al-Mazan do not cease
their ruins, lying beside the earth,
To slumber upon their ruins and little hills

They observed not except to abandon

Intentionally, and fended off constantly the formidable

Has lodged within my heart, accustomed to sorrow

they fold up the wilderness and consume the deserts.

Rather, they roamed love-maddened, though held fast by
