    Your letter arrived, my lord, containing

    Muʿādh’s gardens, whose scent is sweet perfume.

    So it was lovelier than the enchantment stirred

    By a gazelle’s languid eyelids, full of coy allure.

    فما لإنسانِ عينٍ عنه مُنعَرَجُ

    When it appeared, the sight of it held eyes captive;

    No eye’s pupil could turn away from it.

    So I spent the night curing with it an illness lodged

    Within my ribs, where sorrow seethed all night.

    O you whose absence has changed the world,

    Every wide, spacious place is narrow and cramped.

    يرتاحُ قلبي لذكراهُ ويبتهجُ

    I entrust to God the life I spent with you;

    My heart takes comfort in its memory and rejoices.

    فكُلُّ مستحسنٍ في ناظري سَمِجُ

    Since you left, nothing I once delighted in has pleased me;

    So everything deemed beautiful is ugly in my eyes.
