Zaynab turned away and severed the cord of your union,
Zainab cut off and severed the rope of your connection
Haughtily, delighted by beguiling youth.
Wandering, and the admiring youths amazed her

How often she used to linger as she passed,
And she often acted to prolong her passing
And come deliberately to see you, then depart.
And she would come intentionally so she could see you and leave

Do not marvel, O heart, at her desertion:
Don’t be surprised, oh heart, by her estrangement
For her union, had it lasted, would be stranger than that.
For even if her company lasted, it would be more amazing

Three things urged the lovely woman to turn away:
Three things allured the beautiful one:
Distance, poverty, and a head gone gray.
Distance, scarcity, and hoary hair

So turn aside from seeking her reconciliation, for
So turn away and pardon her completely, for what
A gray-haired, penniless man is not one to press a grievance.
Rebuke and poverty can come from an old man

And keep the water of her face for you, and with it
Worthy of it; do not say, 'Hearts change.'
Be steadfast, and do not say hearts are fickle

And if you hoped to pasture and graze
With matters thus, then welcome, Ash'ab!
While in that condition, then welcome O Ash'ab

How excellent is the valley of Hassa, for it
Even if it grieved me, is a valley beloved to me.
If a valley soured for me, is beloved

How excellent is the road of Salim, and how excellent
That settled company there, and that playground!
Is that small valley through it and that playground

And a group of friends I left, not because of any
On my part; nor have I a father other than theirs.
Enmity from me, and I have none but their fathers as kin

And the noble-eyed daughter of the summit of Wail

Her forefathers and ancestors when she is attributed

I shared with her the prime of youth and its water
Flowing, and the ember of its fire blazing.
Flowing, and the blaze of its fire kindling

Do not think days wear down a new garment
Ever, nor that youth's mantle could be stripped off.
Ever, nor does the cold of youth get stripped away

And from far off lands, darkening visions
A trackless wilderness where gazelles and hares perish:
Wandering, gazelles and hares die in it

A caparisoned steed, if it appears, looks no different,
Wandering eyes appear similar, if they show
To one crossing its expanse, from a fox.
In the eye of a wanderer, and foxes too

I plunged into it on a swift she-camel, speed's own match,
I plunged her into the battle of fighters, covered
A lone beast, with a fleet bay steed keeping pace with her.
By none equaling her, slain ones made absent

I have with her no friend but worries
And a keen-edged sword of Indian steel, and a resourceful heart.
And roused, raging heart and restless soul

I have milked the udder-halves of Time's old she-camel,
And I have milked fate half of its udder’s milk
And learned what it reveals and what lies hidden.
And known what it shows and what disappears

So if the friendship of all those I held dear
With my love, in times of need, is lightning without rain.
Was sincere at times of need, it was deceptive lightning

To take refuge with him from Time, and flee:
To resort to against time and escape

A king besides him at whose court caravans kneel.

Blazing in resolve, his might is feared,
With burning resolves, feared for might
And the thick-necked lion fears his onslaught.
And the roaming lions dread his ferocity

Clothes the shoulders and souls are snatched away.
And souls stripped when slaughter wets shoulders

The bright swords in the hands of armored champions—their light
His steed is accustomed to wars, as if it
Floats up repeatedly through the dust, then sinks.
Drinks from the water of warriors' attacks

As though the points of the spearheads were stars,
It swoops down in battles as the eagle swooped
Bright, and the dark battle-dust a pitch-black night.
At the fox's hide when talons grab

In a battlefield where Death ravaged its people:
No morning shone on a land his horses raided
One dust-covered, one blood-drenched, one hacked apart.
Except that death in it stood to ask for betrothal

By God, your worth - which fearless knight are you
Drinks from the fluid of the horsemen's skulls.
And today is a day for steeds tightly saddled

It swoops in a dive when charging, as swoops
A refuge for the anguished and protection for the hopeful
A gray, hook-taloned hawk upon its prey.
Who finds hope in him the greatest and most sought

Never has the vanguard of his horses reached a dwelling at dawn
He did not refuse sanctuary except his honor
But Death stood within it, preaching.
And honor with the virtuous is not gifted away

A soul, by my life, gentle and of finer nature
When the day is grievous for noble steeds!
Sweeter than clear, fresh water and more delicious

And a refuge for the distressed, a safeguard for a hopeful man,
They ransom you, best of kings - a people
Who kindled his hope in him, though the goal was hard to win.
Appeared, but when they appeared, they were absent

Petitioners were denied nothing but his honor,
If praised, they grew angry at their praiser
And honor, among the wise, is not given away.
Fearing reward, and if blamed, they did not grow angry

A spirit, by my life, bitter—and manners
Their wealth atop the sky and their glory
Sweeter and more refreshing than limpid water.
Rising above the summit when sought

May bands of men be your ransom, O best of kings—
They made their bodies shields for their possessions
They rose to view, but the moment they appeared, they faded.
So they became torn apart in the lands and plundered
إِنif يُمدَحواthey are praised غَضِبُواthey grow angry عَلىat مُدّاحِهِمtheir praisers

If praised, they grow angry at their praisers,
So for that the people said about their fathers
For fear of recompense; if lampooned, they do not grow angry.
May God make ugly the fatherhood that did not beget them

By God, your worth O Ali - none remains
Costs its bidder dearly when it is sought.
In this time but you refined

They made their reputations a shield for their worldly trash,
The Ahsa became settled through you, and it
So those reputations are torn and plundered throughout the lands.
Had quaked with all in it and nearly overturned

For that, people said of their fathers:
Had you not shored its cracks and repaired its rifts
'May God disgrace such fatherhood: they bred no worthy sons!'
The horses of destruction in it would have frolicked

And prevented it, after it had been barren,
Shaken with all within it and nearly been overturned.
From being pillaged and plundered in every direction

And you filled it with justice, and it had become
The horses of destruction would have gone leaping through it.

And you removed the harms from it, and for long
Its mourning women had risen, wailing and lamenting.
Affliction dwelled within it seeping

Until it is as if you - and the likener is truthful -
Raided and plundered in every quarter.

The wealthy slept, and before you did not sleep
With oppression that makes dwellings sink and crumble.
Fearing oppressions, awake tossing and turning

Affliction had poured down through its skies.

The rich man sleeps; before you, he never ceased
Do not incline toward the enemy or obey
Tossing sleeplessly for fear of injustice.
The views of those in another's rope who kindle
وَمَشىand walked الفَقيرُthe poor man ضُحىًat midmorning وَهَوَّنَand took lightly آمِناًsecure
بِالإِلتِفاتِlooking back وَأَسفَرَand uncovered his face المُتَنَقِّبُthe veiled man
The poor man walked at midmorning, secure, and thought little
And disobey the disgraced if he suggests, and do not trust
Of looking back; the veiled man uncovered his face.
In creatures, all those you befriend
إِيهاًcome now أَباAbu (father of) المَنصورِal-Mansur يَقظَةthe vigilance of ثائِرٍan avenger
بَطَلٍa hero لِعَلياهُfor his high honor يَغارُis protective وَيَغضَبُand grows angry
Rouse yourself, Abu al-Mansur, with an avenger's vigilance,
And know the people - I have tested them
A hero protective of his high honor, who grows angry for it.
So if true friendship comes from them, it is a scorpion
لاdo not تَركنَنَّever lean إِلىtoward العُدوِّthe enemy وَلاand do not تُطِعobey

Do not lean toward the enemy, and do not obey
And accept the advice of Majid when he distances himself
The counsels of one who gathers wood with a rope not yours.
From you for poor opinion, and he is the closest
وَاِعصَand disobey الذَّليلَthe abject man إِذاwhen أَشارَhe advises وَلاand do not تَثِقtrust
فيin الكائِناتِlife's affairs بِكُلِّeveryone مَنwhom تَستَصحِبُyou take as a companion
Disobey the abject man when he advises, and do not trust,
Your noble, generous fathers if they belonged
In life's affairs, everyone you take as a companion.
Their fathers and forefathers when connected
وَاِعلَمand know بِأَنَّthat الناسَpeople قَدindeed جَرَّبتهُمI have tested them
فَإِذاand behold صَحيحُsincere الوُدِّin affection مِنهُمamong them عَقرَبُa scorpion
Know that I have put people to the test,
They left you in every land they settled
And behold, the truly affectionate among them is a scorpion.
A nobility which shines, his mention rising and setting
وَاِقبَلand accept نَصيحَةَthe counsel of ماجِدٍa noble man بِاعدتَهُyou drove him away
عَنكُمfrom you لِضَعفِthrough weakness of الرَأيِjudgment وَهوَand he is الأَقرَبُthe nearest
Accept the counsel of a noble man you drove away
Your enemy cozening with his distance
From you through poor judgment, though he is the nearest.
From you with the selves of what is sold and sought
آباؤُكَyour fathers الغُرُّillustrious الكِرامُnoble إِذاwhen اِنتَمَواthey trace their lineage

آباؤُهُhis fathers وَجُدُودُهُand his forefathers إِذwhen تُنسَبُancestry is traced
Your illustrious, noble fathers, when their descent is traced,
The wide-mouthed dogs bark back at your pond
Are his fathers and forefathers, when ancestry is reckoned.
And are driven away as the crow is driven
أَبقىhe left لَكُمfor you فيin كُلِّevery دارٍhouse حلَّهاhe lodged in it
شَرَفاًhonor يُشَرِّقُtravels east ذِكرُهُits fame وَيُغَرِّبُand travels west
In every house where he lodged, he left for you
And the lion of evil terrifies me in its land
Honor whose fame travels east and west.
While in yours the fox is insolent with me
يَشريbuys عَدُوُّكُمُyour enemy المُداجيdissembling بُعدَهُhis estrangement
عَنكُمfrom you بِأَنفَسِwith the most precious ماwhat يُباعُis sold وَيُطلَبُand sought
Your dissembling enemy buys his estrangement
And with your bow each day I shoot
From you with the most precious things bought or sought.
And with your sword each day I strike
تَرِدُcome to drink at الكِلابُthe dogs الواسِعِيَّةُWasi'iyya حَوضَكُمyour watering pool
وَأُذادُand I am driven away عَنهُfrom it كَماjust as يُذادُis driven away الأَجرَبُthe mangy one
The Wasi'iyya dogs come to drink at your pool,
And I say what Ibn Murrah said openly
While I am driven from it like a mangy beast.
I have no mother if this remains, nor father
وَتُجِلُّنيand honor me أُسدُthe lions of الشَّرىal-Shara فيin أَرضِهاtheir land
وَبِأَرضِكُمand in your land يَسطوattacks عَلَيَّupon me الثَّعلَبُthe fox
The lions of al-Shara honor me in their land,
For me in God's lands, from those who do not see
While in your land the fox attacks me.
My right, there are places to wander as I wish and depart
وَبِقَوسِكُمand with your bow فيon كُلِّevery يَومٍday أَرتَميI am shot at
وَبِسَيفِكُمand with your sword فيon كُلِّevery يَومٍday أُضرَبُI am struck
With your bow I am shot at every day,
So protect my bequest, O Ali, and do not neglect
And with your sword I am struck every day.
What you have been entrusted, and soften your severity, I melt
وَأَقولُand I say ماwhat قالَsaid اِبنُIbn (son of) مُرَّةَMurra مُعلِناًopenly proclaiming
لاno أُمَّmother ليfor me إِنif دامَcontinues ذاكَthat وَلاand no أَبُfather
And I proclaim what Ibn Murra proclaimed:
And upon you is the justice you revived
'May I have no mother, if that continues, nor father!'
So the supplication of a weeper in darkness is unveiled
ليfor me فيin بِلادِthe lands of اللَّهِGod عَمَّنaway from those who لاdo not يَرىacknowledge
حَقّيmy right مَراحٌroom to roam كَيفَhowever شِئتُI wish وَمَذهَبُand a way to go
For me in God's lands, away from those who deny
And you remained, settlements secured, supported
My rights, are room to roam as I please and a way to go.
As long as a supplicant stands in prayer to bless
فَاِحفَظso heed وِصاتيmy counsel ياO عَلِيُّAli وَلاand do not تُضِعneglect

ماwhat قَدindeed وُليتَyou were entrusted with فَحولَfor around شاتِكَyour sheep أَذؤُبُwolves
Heed my counsel, Ali, and do not neglect
What you have been entrusted with: wolves surround your sheep.
وَعَلَيكَand hold fast بِالعَدلِto justice الَّذيwhich أَحيَيتَهُyou revived
فَدُعاءِfor the prayer of باكٍone weeping فيin الدُجىthe darkness لاnot يُحجَبُis barred
Hold fast to the justice you revived,
For a weeper's prayer in the darkness is not barred.
وَبَقيتَand may you remain مَعمورَwell-peopled الجَنابِin your court مُؤَيّداًsupported

May you remain, your court well peopled and you upheld,
As long as a caller rises to repeat the summons to prayer.
