    وَباعُكَ مِن رَضوى وَثَهلانَ أَطوَلُ

    Your fingertips pour more rain than the drenching clouds;

and your reach is longer than Radwa and Thahlan.

Your house is a house of safety from every calamity,

and your well-peopled dwelling is a home for glory.

When the masters of distinction and eminence are counted,

you are foremost, despite your adversaries.

You have surpassed perfection's measure; no one sees

a perfect eminence without yours being more perfect.

You have won the qualities of excellence in every sphere,

so no excellent man exists but you are preferred to him.

O perfection of mankind, departure is at hand; no longer is there

for one in need an excuse to turn aside from his purpose.

Nothing remains but for a traveler to bid farewell

to one who stays, their paths leading south and north.

I speak, with a scattered heart held together by

ribs within which longing rises and falls.

I have a moan that saddens hearts, and a sigh

at whose slightest stirring my ribs nearly fall apart.

I have almost voiced my yearning in vexation

at injustice, but I keep my composure.

May God curse an age whose turns have driven me

    to where the rights of one like me are voided and neglected;

and may He punish my illustrious people with the worst punishment,

singling out those descended from Ali and Abdal.

But for them—and God knows this—

no tongue of mine would have voiced praise among people,

nor would my saddle have been set down in al-Fayha', nor would

the villages outside al-Zawra', or Irbil, have seen me.

From the inheritance of my grandfather and my father I had

wealth enough for a hopeful seeker of riches.

Nor would men have met my standing with ignorance,

nor one most ignorant of noble deeds have slighted my worth.

If what I seek is burdensome to them,

reminders of favors weigh still heavier on a noble, free man.

Had it not been for hope in Muhammad, I would have had

a distant refuge and a way to depart from Mosul al-Hadba.

    وَلِلخَطبِ يُرجى ذُو العُلى وَيُؤَمَّلُ

    I came there only invoking hope in him;

in calamity, a man of eminence is hoped for and relied upon.

His house, whose pillar is lofty, will not permit

my returning in a state unseemly to make public.

And how could it, when I know he has insight

when minds are baffled and good fortune advances?

My two friends, not all men, however high they rise,

are Kamal, nor is every region Mosul.

Not every plant the earth brings forth is food,

nor is every water the eye sees a watering place.

He is the illustrious, gallant man whose precinct is not

rugged, and whose door of generosity is not locked.

Magnanimous: if you ask the clouds of his fingertips for rain,

they give you life-giving rain whose flood shames the sea.

Generous when the calves of milk-rich she-camels stagger,

and the massive mature camels can bear no load.

Smiling when the year furrows its face

in a scowl and bares its fang in its harshness.

Yet he weeps profusely in the dense darkness of night,

in humility, keeping his night alive at its darkest.

Ka'b and Hatim acknowledge his generosity,

and Zayd and Daghfal award him glory.

From a branch of Wa'il he rose to the peaks of eminence,

and every youth of Wa'il is a refuge.

Through his forefathers Nizar grew mighty, and came

to say resolutely what it wished, and do it.

Kings—they slew Labid; and what left

Tubba' writhing were the points of their spears.

On the day of al-Kulab, they left upon the soil

Shurahbil a dismembered corpse, birds hopping around him.

And 'Amr ibn Hind—they turbaned the crown of his head

with a sword that cleaves helmets and skulls from above.

Their latest has no equal among today's latest men,

and their earliest had no equal among the earliest.

Indeed, Kamal al-Din—may he always remain perfect—

is too honorable and noble to owe his eminence to a grandsire.

    هُوَ البَحرُ جُوداً بَل عَطاياهُ أَجزَلُ

    He is a mountain in forbearance, an Indian blade in resolve;

he is the sea in generosity—rather, his gifts are more lavish.

His awe fills the breasts; yet he,

for all his might, is truly a devoted ascetic.

He took charge and bestowed good on the people, and now

thirsting hopes are fully slaked by his bounty.

He met his subjects with his wing lowered,

yet within his mantle is a lion of Khuffan with cubs.

You see him and find in peace a single man,

but in calamities he is a mighty army.

Fierce without arrogance, outspoken without concealment,

he inquires after guest and neighbor, a decisive arbiter.

You who strive to attain his reach,

go slowly; let no misguided striving deceive you.

I have known the sons of this age, and have not found

anyone but him who bears a burden when laden with it.

How many a companion I accompanied, not hoping

for bounty from his hands: rather, I was the one relied upon.

I exhausted myself in building his glory,

as though entrusted with it in every respect.

When his endeavors rusted, I polished them

with a kindness of my own—for glory has a burnisher.

But when time shot me from a drawn bow—

and time has turns that wrong and do justice—

he aimed at my mortal spot with the others, knowing

that even the limbs of one assailed by time are mortal targets.

Good deeds came to be counted as offenses

against me; my enemy is favored, and I am shut out.

His offenses against me multiply without excuse,

yet at evening I plead innocence at his gates.

This was no inability to repay a traitor,

but my forbearance toward the ignorant is better.

May God never take Muhammad away,

for no other creature can be relied upon.

May this not be our last meeting; indeed,

I beseech God that we may meet again.

Alas, my misery at the greatness of a tormenting longing

for him, seeping deep into the folds of my breast.

For you, Kamal al-Din, is a necklace of jewels,

which I begrudge to anyone but you and jealously withhold.

Unable to set such jewels in their necklaces are

Darim's kinsman, the two al-A'shas, and Jarwal.

Father of generosity, called upon in calamity, I

have hoped in you; one called upon does not make evasive excuses.

So defend a noble man who never reckoned on

alighting at sultans' gates to beg,

nor imagined that time would strive to ensnare him

and cast its throat and heavy chest upon him.

None remains but you, a doorway of access

through which people may enter into every good.

Live for lofty deeds, and endure for glory as long as

Thamir and Yadhbul endure through the passing nights.
