The dowry of high glory is a Mashrafi sword and a slender spear,

And a full-length, fine-meshed coat of mail, and a neighing, sleek steed.

And spear-thrusts when the battle-kindling Ghuzz advance,

Their seasoned steeds trotting beneath them and swiftly shifting their strides.

And sword-blows when proud lords take fright and draw back,

And among the horsemen, whoever does not fight flees.

And driving hard the long-necked young she-camels, striding as though they were

Fleeing ostriches on the highest crest of the waste.

With this each stalwart man crosses the desert,

Hastening to win high rank and pressing onward.

His night and his day are alike to him,

As are his travel in the heat at forenoon and the late afternoons.

O suitor of high glory, never think it is

Maidens' chatter brought forth by the spindles.

Step aside and leave it thus, without disgrace,

For a valiant king: whatever it desires, he gives.

A radiant Uyunid, whose brow is like

The flat of a sword burnished pure by the polishers.

Fadl and Abdal raised him to high glory,

And Ahmad, and the chieftain, the lion, the mighty lord.

He is the sweet watering-place, delightful to approach,

When watering-places turn foul for drinkers.

Poison to foes, lavish in bounty, repeller of foes,

Far in reach: through him the contender for greatness rises.

Through him Hinb took pride, and through his glory rose

Lukayz; Abd Qays and Wa'il gained might.

His is the summit of deeply rooted glory and high rank,

When tribes branch apart on the day of boasting.

Praiseworthy in character, his foes never depart

With their heads and the blades at peace.

He makes his sword's edge the judge over his enemies,

When spearheads shatter against armored warriors.

When a beholder sees him, he imagines that he is

A shooting star descending from the horizon upon an evildoer.

Men of ambition seek to match his reach,

But where are streams beside the vast sea?

And the two Farqad stars are far beyond reach, even if

The would-be grasper climbs the towering summits.

He is the sea, but his rising tide never ebbs.

He is the full moon, save that he is full throughout all time.

He is the sun in the expanse of heaven, and its light

Encompasses everyone on the face of the earth.

He is the rain-cloud, save that he rides a galloping steed,

And in every land come pouring showers and heavy rain from him.

He is the lion, save that his lair is the spears,

And his quarry are proud, unfettered kings.

He is the blade, but its edge is not felt by

Fingertips, though blades are felt with hands.

When his banners descend at dawn on the home of a people

Of enemies, its orphans and widows multiply.

And even if his steeds are tethered among the tents,

They roam through the livers of kings.

So tell the foes: wait a little, for he is

A deadly poison to whoever seeks enmity.

It is as though you have never known his assaults,

When war's cauldrons boil over with its blaze.

Ask—and receive an informed account of his deeds—

The sons of Malik; a freeborn man speaks the truth.

Did he not bring the sleek, noble-bred horses, lean,

    From al-Khatt, followed by easy-striding riding-camels,

Until they knelt at al-Dajani, after

Night travel and exhaustion had wasted them, leaving them gaunt?

Then at dawn they raided a tribe whose encampments had never been raided

Before, nor had massed armies sought to face it.

How many a people's chieftain they left felled,

His limbs severed by limping, loping beasts.

And how much wealth of a miser among that people came to be

Divided by force, its bulk and its choicest possessions.

And how many a maiden who had not left her curtained chamber for an hour

Wrings her hands over him, bereaved.

Saying, while the tears from her eyes seem

Like pearls fallen from their string in a shower:

Mercy, mercy, O son of the noblest! You have not left

Us any hope around which our fingers might close.

And at Linah he slew the hulking warriors of Tayy,

Openly, while dust changed the color of the air.

That evening, his steed's reins were not turned back by

Hima, while the maidens did nothing but wail together.

He went off like the male ostrich going at dusk, urged

To run by a night already closing in and a downpour.

If he escapes his swords, he has indeed escaped

With maddening confusion from terror in his heart.

And at al-Hazm they had a harsh, calamitous day,

When those tribes had mustered for war:

Anin and the house of al-Fadl, of the house of Barmak,

And all were the nose and shoulder of honor.

And Zubayd came like locusts, and Tayy,

Each feeding himself hopes of what he sought.

They thought the emir was in his home,

Remaining there; letters had reached them saying so.

Then the broad spaces of Qays's clans grew cramped

With fear, and their watering-places were closed to them.

And messengers came to him, informing him

Of what had befallen; the affair was then terrible.

So he set out from al-Ahsa, borne across the wastes by

Noble-bred, seasoned steeds and briskly trotting riding-camels.

They passed al-Anbari's palace, and there was no

Concern for them apart from the enemies' abode.

They sensed nothing until the mounts fell upon them,

As drenching rain pours down in torrents.

Their tails raised as scorpions raise theirs; upon them rode

Lions, but their thickets were clouds of battle-dust.

They sprang up, jabbing their lances, each one

Spear-fighting amid their surges and wheeling about,

Until a band of the house of Fadl appeared,

Beside whom the lofty, towering man was short.

Majid, brother of generosity, leads their forelocks,

    And Fadl, when the armored challenger takes fright;

And lofty Ahmad is mighty, and each of them

Is a man to be trusted, rising above those he battles.

Then he reinforced the horsemen's vanguard, after

A Mashrafi sword and a slender spear had shattered among them.

Then the lion of the thicket came forward—I mean Muhammad—

Searching for his cubs and asking after them.

He was told: beneath the dust-cloud their occupation is

Thrusting at foes where the body's vital spots are hidden.

So he made them meet his stallion's breast, as though he were

Pledged to take the people's lives with the sword.

They scattered, slipping away—some captive, some fleeing,

And some slain, mourned by bereaved women.

None remained but a frightened man awaiting

Swift death, or a sojourner facing battle.

After all that might, their kings became

Each humbled and diminished in his presence.

There is no shame if they seek shelter under a lord's protection,

Who towers above all, so vengeance cannot be hoped for in his presence.

Before this, under Hani's protection sought refuge

The sons of Mundhir, when calamities confronted them.

So say to Uqayl, its lean and its fat alike,

When assemblies gather it at the pasture-camps:

Indeed, the emir Muhammad's deed is only

To revive what the earliest forefathers established.

At Khazaza they defended you from the foes,

And that was a day bitter to taste, grim and fierce.

    فَما يَكفُرُ النَعماءَ في الناسِ عاقِلُ

    So give thanks, without ingratitude, for Rabi'a's striving;

No sensible person among mankind denies a blessing.

To you, son of the cleaver of horsemen, comes a praise-poem

Before which your enviers' shoulders bow.

It comes to you like a string of pearls, from a kinsman,

To revive affection, not in pursuit of wealth.
