Leave him be: the wisest course is not to rebuke him.
Let him be, for the best opinion is not to reproach him harshly,
For if reproach could heal his ailment, he would have recovered.
For even if blaming could cure his illness, he would have recovered.

sorrow-stricken and has suffered reproach enough.
Is sensitive and has suffered enough from blame.

Were it not for a passion he cannot control,
he would be too proud to soften.
His dignity would have prevented him from being so humble.

But one who loves, though he be of high status,
must submit and show gentleness.
Must show weakness and act with humility.

My two friends, arise and give me to drink
the choicest wine, bitter to the taste and shiver-inducing.
A delicious, bittersweet wine, in a large goblet.

From a drinking companion's hand—or, had he appeared in his beauty
May Jacob not have regretted losing Joseph
to Jacob, he would not have grieved over Joseph's loss.
When he saw his beauty in the palm of a boon companion.

It would have shown jealousy and hid itself away.

And we never taste the wine cup without becoming drunk.

May God keep the tippler alive and familiar.

where birds remain perched upon their branches.

Gardens by Dujayl—had Ghaylan set down his saddle
A little garden, if the wandering camel rested in it an hour,
there for an hour, they would have made him forget Huzwa and Mushrif.
It would make him forget his sadness and elevation.

who cleared and dispelled grief from the core of my heart.
Who has dispelled the sorrow from my gloomy heart and uncovered it.

Seeking advantage, and brought me closer and honored me.

So my soul is ransomed for him - how excellent and gentle he is!

Do not ask about those who have passed or lagged behind.

Noble, humane, and excellent in manners.

His glory no claim, and his generosity no affectation.

You will not find a wicked or upstart man.

He came after them while time had unsheathed its sword
against mankind, grown savage with its edge, and charged.
Against the people and spread ruin and havoc.

Or weaken his resolve - no, he followed his forefathers' ways.

By my life, he revived generosity after its death
and renewed an abode of greatness that had been effaced.
And renewed a quarter for the noble that had been forgotten.

By his hands good became fresh, and the meadows of generosity
the pools of bounty streamed from the overflow of his hands.
Became flooding from the outpouring of his palms.

Though about to perish, were saved at the brink.

You see generosity and kindness as instinct in him,
In him you see generosity and benevolence as innate,
a nature by which he led mankind, not an affectation.
A natural disposition by which he excelled all mankind without affectation.

That is only because wealth is trivial to him,
to him: he gives with a smile and doubles his gifts.
So he gives with a smile and makes little of it.

Gloomily and every star withdraws and disappears.

Humbly, never deviating from the right path.

The most caring of Imams for his subjects and most merciful.

By which they became leaders and chiefs.

And each man of them is distinguished by his own.
وَزادُواand they added خِلالاًvirtues لَوif عَدَدتُI counted عَشيرَهاa tenth of them
وَزادُوا خِلالاً لَو عَدَدتُ عَشيرَها
لَدَوَّنتُI would record فيهاabout them مُصحَفاًa volume ثُمَّthen مُصحَفاanother volume
لَدَوَّنتُ فيها مُصحَفاً ثُمَّ مُصحَفا
They have added virtues: were I to count a tenth of them,
If I were to count their other virtues fully
I would fill a volume with them, then another.
I would compile in them volume after volume.

O traveler bound for Bahrain, driving a swift she-camel,
O you voyaging to the two seas, the ship's sail billowing
as though cotton lay upon her drooping jowls:
As if it had bellies full from eating crumbs of bread.

when you meet the kings, the sons of my father—
When you meet the noble kings, the clan of Abu Arribah
their discerning one and their proud, swaggering one—
And Al-Ablakh the pretentious.

give them from me the greeting of one who loves,
Convey greetings from me, of an affectionate one
kind to his cousin, even if he severs kinship or turns away.
Who cares for the son of an uncle, whether he accepts or spurns.

Tell them: Do not neglect gratitude to a lord
Tell them: Do not neglect gratitude to a master
who sought your brother out with honor and chose him.
Who has chosen your brother for honor and drawn him near.

Whoever fails to render Ibn al-Dawami his due,
Whoever among you does not fulfill the requirements
for what demands your thanks, has not fulfilled his duty.
Of thankfulness for his due has not fulfilled them.
فَقَدfor he has أَلبَسَclothed النَّعماءَblessings حَيّيthe two clans of رَبيعَةٍRabi'a

For he has clothed Rabi'a's two clans in blessings,
He has clothed the favors of Rabi'ah's lineage
as he clothed Khindif in blessings before them.
As before him the favors of Khindif were clothed.

Who denies kindness but a child of illicit birth,
Does anyone deny gratitude except the son of an adulteress
who turns a sheathed heart between his ribs?
With a heart that turns over between his sides, unenlightened?
وَيأَبىand forbids لِيَto me الكُفرانَingratitude أَنّيthat I اِبنُa son of حُرَّةٍa free woman

كَريمٌ مَتى صَرَّفتُ عَزمي تَصَرَّفا
Being a free woman's son forbids me ingratitude,
I refuse ingratitude, for I am the son of Hurrah,
a noble man: whenever I direct my resolve, it responds.
Noble, however I may steer my resolve.

And I, though the tent-pole of my house stands high,
And though I am he whose glory has the highest pillar,
surely praise him for what he has already bestowed.
I will praise him for what he did aforetime.

Nor am I barred from this by a house whose structure
A house whose building competes with the Pleiades
rises above the leading star of the Pleiades and towers high.
Will not prevent me, towering and elevated though it be.
فَقَدتَmay you be spared الرَدىdeath ياO باAbu عَلِيٍّAli إِلىto العِدىthe foes

May death leave you, Abu Ali, and go to your foes,
You have attained, O father of Ali, the farthest limit
and may you surpass all bounds, a source of hope and fear, sought for bounty.
And reached the extent hoped for, feared and aspired to.
وَمُتِّعتَand may you enjoy بِالأَمجادِthe illustrious أَبنائِكَyour sons الأُلىwho

May you enjoy your illustrious sons, who
You were granted eternal glories for your lofty sons
are sufficient for every crisis and bring healing.
By them one attains all ends and aspires to all goals.

May the caliphate never cease to strike with one of them,
The caliphate did not cease to pass between them,
a radiant nobleman it calls bestower and destroyer.
Calling to guidance, concord, and reform.

May the enemies of their glory and those who envy them live
While the envious and jealous of their glory
enduring grief from which they see no escape.
Endured sorrows from which they saw no escape.
