Hajar flourished after its condition had deteriorated,

And its beauty and loveliness returned to it.

And it now rivals the two gardens of the land of Ma'rib,

As they were in the nights when the sons of Ma' al-Sama' dwelt there.

How lovely it is now that its stability is secure,

And what brought it misfortune has departed from it,

Through the return of one blessed in fortune—were he to fall

Upon the earth, its mountains would move away in fear of him.

Through him the land of al-Hasa and others were set right,

Though setting them right had baffled mankind.

    وَإِن آبَ فيها آبَ فيها ثِمالُها

    When he is absent from it, its spring is absent too;

And if he returns to it, its sustainer returns.

A young man, feared and looked to with hope for as long as he has lived,

When its men fall short on a day of calamity.

A tyrant fears him, and a frightened man hopes in him,

As does a widow whose dependents have died of emaciation.

He cuts short men's speeches with a single word,

And then their disputation falls short of him.

The kings of East and West wish that he

Were a right hand, and all the worlds its left hand.

A hero: whenever his name is called out to the cavalry,

The field of their charge grows too narrow for them.

And if young she-camels, after exhaustion, are urged on with song

By mention of him late at night, their exhaustion leaves them.

And if the dreaded mountain pass is entered, his dwelling

Stands among the earth's highest plateaus and hills.

And if the autumn rain falls on a tribe's abode,

He pastures his herds there, even if its meadows lie on the peaks.

His might exalted 'Uqayl, and its wounds healed,

Though its healing had earlier baffled all but him.

He provided for it and enriched it with the bounty of his hand

And its enemies' wealth; by morning that wealth was its own.

And with his sword he settled it in the enemies' abode,

So their deadly vipers became harmless snakes before it.

And with the Mashrafi sword he brought it to watering places

Whose water is forbidden without the Mashrafi sword.

He established pacts between 'Amr and 'Amir

Whose undoing is beyond men's hands.

By my life, what an excellent rescuer when they call

In a calamity so grave that bearing it brings pain.

And what a fine spokesman for the people when they ask, 'Who will be

Its orator?' and speaking on it has baffled those present.

And what a fine halting place for night visitors when they arrive,

Their saddles rattling after the stillness.

And what a fine refuge for seekers of bounty when harsh

Times come, and the north wind blows in a year of drought.

And what a fine bulwark of the frontier; short of him, there abound

The excuses of men of eminence and their pretexts.

So, O possessor of eminence, glory, and the great tree whose

Branch has flourished and whose shade has grown sweeter,

By your fortune, since you left us we have had no unclouded

Life, nor has the streaming of tears left our eyes.

And that is only from a tormenting longing

To kiss a hand that not everyone can attain.

Its fingertips hold life and mercy,

And death; its outpouring enriches petitioners.

So live forever, O Abu 'Ali, in honor

Whose majesty grows with the passing of nights.

For you are the one without whom no banner would have remained

For glory, and its ropes would surely have frayed.

And be earnest and strive for the clan of Jarwan, for they are

Swords whose blades offer hospitality to your enviers.

They offered, for whatever would please you, lives

Of noble worth, while war's fire blazed ever higher.

And they shattered the brown shafts of tall lances, and notched

The striking edges of swords only newly burnished,

On the morning when Abu al-Jarrah went forth as though he were

A wilderness ostrich, its chicks following its tracks.

And they drove the enemies from your protected domain and split

Skulls whose long-standing error had never ceased.

And I counsel you to treat the whole clan well,

For, after God, you are its refuge.

For you are the one who revived it and came to its aid,

While the enemies' gossip and chatter had multiplied.

So pay no heed to the words of a slanderer who slanders it,

For the enviers' messenger brings nothing but their scheming.

And disregard the slanderers' allegations, for they are

Aimed at things I believe they will not attain.
