Reproaching the lovelorn intensifies his anguish,

And kindles the fire of longing in his soul.

So stop reproaching him, and leave him to himself

In his lamentation, his yearning, and his weeping.

And if you can, against longing and grief,

Help him, and win his affection and brotherly friendship.

A true friend gives his heart's pure affection

To his loved ones and his trusted intimates.

O reproacher of the yearning lover, gently—take your time

In blaming him, for he knows his ailment well.

Whenever you wish one day to blame a lover,

Place your heart beneath the shadow of his breast.

If it settles, then blame your brother; but if it recoils,

Be the peerless companion among his companions.

And how can you reproach a distraught man possessed by passion,

Whose reason and fortitude separation has swept away?

The archer of separation did not miss his heart's core

When he shot deliberately with the bow of his enmity.

My soul be ransom for him to whom my tenderness became

Bondage, which I have yielded to no other,

And for him who has a dwelling in every limb

Of mine, whether his abode is near or far.

I long to visit him, yet fear, before I reach him,

The sidelong glares from the eyes of his watchers.

And I turn away from him when we meet, in fear

Of a secret enemy nursing his rancor.

I strive to conceal my love, but it is betrayed

By my eye; and a lover's eye is among his enemies.

It wrongs him with its glance; then, once it has wronged him

And led him captive into love, it betrays him with its tears.

O my reproacher, may you live only mute,

Blind and deaf, seeing with a bewildered heart.

You have gone too far in blaming me, and further still; you will never see

My heart obey you in abandoning its love,

Unless you see what lies between Salma and al-Hima

As a sea with birds swimming through its reaches.

And beside the lord, whose station is exalted,

Are his accustomed valor and generosity.

A lord the Imam chose for what he saw

Of his merit, his service, and his toil.

And deemed him worthy of eminence, then singled him out

With a lofty station and the bounty of his gifts.

He gave rulership its due, never feeble,

Dependent on others, or blind in rendering judgment.

Vigilant in resolve, his face proclaims

His prudence, his decisiveness, and his intelligence.

For he has indeed spared Islam every calamity

And borne the weight of its burdens.

And aided the company of believers through what appeared

Of his noble conduct and lavish giving.

And struck the tyrants of hypocrisy with a crushing calamity,

Overwhelming, telling of his splendid prowess.

His might assails his adversary from beneath him,

From just above him, from before him, and from behind him.

Were he to strike at time's calamities with a deadly blow,

They would seek refuge from his wrath in his favor.

Or were he to march seeking the stars in an onslaught,

Their brightest would become his captives.

His awe-inspiring presence has filled his enemies' hearts,

And he fills the horizon with the light of his splendor.

He mastered time and its people, and there held sway

His decrees throughout its earth and its heaven.

The full moon is eclipsed by his radiant smile,

And the sword is blunted by his decisive judgment.

And the sea is shamed by the generosity of his hand,

With his sweet wellspring and his fair appearance.

And the lion is outdone by the daring of his heart,

Alongside the piety and modesty seen in him.

And good fortune is among his supports, and death among

His allies, and victory among his companions.

What is Hatim al-Ta'i on his day of giving?

What is Wa'il al-Hashmi on his day of defiance?

What is Quss al-Zuhri on his day of oratory?

What is al-Harith al-Bakri on his day of faithfulness?

If they returned, and their age returned,

They would not rank among his equals in excellence.

O weary one, whose pale camels exhaustion has destroyed,

Since time's vicissitudes devoured his wealth's very substance,

Why not make your camels kneel, to rest and gather

The fresh fruits of greatness in his courtyard?

In the courtyard of a mighty lion, whom no censurer ever blamed

For giving without his growing still more fervent in it.

The days cannot slight his pledge of protection, nor

Assail anyone who clings to hope in him.

So may God prosper him and grant His creatures joy

Through his enduring rule and his long life.
