She sent word, threatening separation and warning me.

    Gently! For tomorrow follows today.

Do not think that youth and its prime

endure, nor that beauty lives forever.

Ten years, and half your beauty will have faded completely,

and what was once praised in it will be blamed.

So seize the season of youth, for it is

a vanishing shade, and life's clear sweetness running out.

    إِنَّ الكَريمَ الحُرَّ تَملِكُهُ اليَدُ

    And do me a kindness: my lifeblood will shield you;

a noble, freeborn man is won by a kindly hand.

    And be certain: youth's fire

has a limit; gray hair quenches it, and it grows cold.

To withhold a thing one is certain to relinquish

is lasting regret and grief renewed.

God bless the days of youth, when our home was

Hajr al-Qura, and we had a familiar haunt at Ijla.

When my locks resembled a raven; and indeed,

black hair is the most pleasing to the eyes.

And my cheek, with the moisture of youth, seemed to hold

a watering place for the eyes of full-breasted maidens.

How many a night grew long, yet its length was shortened by

the music of lutes and the supple gazelle,

and the singing of strings in a songstress's hand,

coquettish, before whom al-Gharid and Ma'bad bowed.

    أَوَ كَيفَ يُنكَرُ لِلصِقالِ مُهَنَّدُ

    You rejected me for gray hair, though it is majesty;

If you reject my gray hair, Umaym, how often

was I the best beloved, while others sought affection!

And how often did they see me and stumble in

their trailing hems—the devout, worshipful women!

And how often a virgin conceived for me through

longing for me, though the watering source had never touched her!

If another is called a 'lord' for his worldly wealth,

a he-goat, in correct speech, is also a 'lord.'

Then ask the young men of your people which of them

can serve as I do, or stand in my place while I sit.

I shoulder the heavy burden, while some of them

merely lower and raise their eyes at it.

And I strive to defend my people's ancestral honor

when disaster strikes or a seeker of aid arrives.

And when adversaries dispute, I am

a sword unsheathed against the stubborn foe.

And the excellence of letters that surpasses mankind

is mine, not theirs; the sun cannot be denied.

And mine is the emir Abu Ali, possessor of lofty rank,

a patron through whom I enter trials and lead others into them:

    ليثُ الهِزبَرُ الناسِكُ المُتَهَجِّدُ

    the noble, gallant, radiant, awe-inspiring,

    the lion, the mighty lion, the devout keeper of night vigils;

the giver of riches whose abundance defies

any count of their silver and gold.

    بَل تَتبَعُ اليَدَ مِن فَواضِلِهِ اليَدُ

    No reproach follows his gifts, nor any harm;

rather, one hand of his bounty follows another.

    وَبِذاكُمُ يَقضي العُلى وَالسُؤدُدُ

    It gives in maddening anger and in contentment;

such is what lofty rank and lordship decree.

His extra gifts embrace the man who lives nearby,

and his bounty reaches the farthest stranger.

Within his protection I dwell in a towering stronghold,

unclimbable, a smooth-walled fortress none can ascend.

Calamities gaze at me as does

a sore-eyed man at the radiant sun at noon.

A king: when they behold his face, kings bow

before the majesty of his awe, and prostrate themselves.

And even that is little from them for a crowned king

of noble ancestry and pure birth.

His descent is from Abd Allah and his son al-Fadl,

    and Abu Sinan and Ahmad—a lineage of glory;

and his father, Mas'ud of spear-combat, and his uncle,

Muhammad, lord of might and all-embracing generosity.

The house of leadership throughout all Nizar—

such are his forefathers, kings of those descended from Ma'add.

Not one of them but is a resolute, noble lord,

a chief whom men seek out when calamities come.

    كُلٌّ يُقِرُّ لَهُ بِذاكَ وَيَشهَدُ

    And his clan is the mightiest clan in Rabi'a;

everyone acknowledges this for him and bears witness.

They prospered because they set forth; no tribe

but has suffered a baleful morning at their hands.

Through that one's abasement this one rises; likewise,

through one people's ill fortune another people's luck prospers.

O you seeking among mankind the like of Muhammad,

desist: Muhammad's like is not to be found.

He outstripped kings, leaving them behind with a garlanded champion's speed,

on a garlanded, noble steed bred by Muqallad.

O you who ask me of him, not out of ignorance,

but seeking yet more of his marvelous deeds,

ask about him when the hearts of the sons of battle

sink and rise within their breasts from fear,

while heads are split by swords, and spears

strike blows that set Death's own flanks trembling.

How many a rebel has he felled with an avenger's thrust,

while bright swords float in the battle dust and lie still!

And many a city rebelled; its heart was assailed at dawn

by a foaming sea from his vast army.

Then it lay with its people captives, firmly bound,

or felled, driven into exile, or shackled.

And how many a man whose court was sought did he advance upon,

until spear-shafts splintered in the hollow of his throat!

Never does mention of him cross an adversary's mind

without a terror arising that makes him rise and sit.

Beneath the dust, a lean steed races with him,

full of impetuous speed, broad-flanked, sleek.

Had Dhu al-Qarnayn marched with his resolve,

    he would not have built a barrier to shield himself;

and Gog, together with Magog, would have been left

as though their remnant were gray ash.

O Bahrain's joy, ever since there fluttered across it

his banners, ranging through lowlands and highlands!

Let his enemies not be impatient: already drawing near

to them is what they were threatened with long ago.

The emir has mustered against them troops that, were they to shoot at

the brilliant stars, would dislodge even the most auspicious.

How excellent a warrior is Muhammad on the day of battle,

when some horses pursue and others are pursued!

And how excellent a refuge for night-travelers driven to him by

a gray, dark night, bitterly cold and chilling!

He succeeded the emir Abu Sinan, his grandfather,

among his people; he is the bountiful, most glorious one.

He healed their wounds and set right among them

    what corrupting Time had ruined.

Let whoever wishes seek another; I have

no one to turn to in all creation but him.

O Abu Ali, a call from one sincere,

whose love is yours; your heart bears witness to it.

Close bonds of kinship draw him near to you,

and loyal counsel, and affection ever renewed.

And wondrous verse, surpassing mankind's poetry,

is recited in your praise in every land.

And here it is for you, Abu Ali, a song of praise,

among whose merits is that I am envied for it.

It came, a peerless weave in its own age,

for you are peerless among all creation.
