Must I have in every land an enemy to fight,

an adversary I grapple with through the long nights,

and one nursing hatred of me, whose fang grinds

against me, while his cauldrons boil with rancor?

As though my father had slain his father,

and here I am—if life grants me time—his slayer.

    فإِن يَفلُلِ العَزمُ الَّذي أَنا حامِلُه

    Leave me to God's earth, for it is vast;

for if the resolve I bear should lose its edge,

my journeys through every trackless waste will be attested

    by my night's last hours—if I live—and its first.

I grew weary of humoring the nights, and was deceived by

a friend I love sincerely, an intimate I keep close.

And I have lost patience with a cousin dearly loved

by me, though his clouds have never watered my land.

How many a night I consoled myself with thoughts of him,

and soothed my heart until its anxieties grew still.

But when we met, my share was his coldness,

while others received his kindness and extra gifts.

Never did I consult my heart about severing his bond

out of despair, without my reason nearly deserting me,

in tenderness toward him, and waiting in hope that he

might return, defying his censurers by favoring me.

And I, despite the injustice that scorches my heart,

still shield him and shoot in his defense at whoever attacks him.

And I show the people that, through nearness to him,

I am a king whose support and largesse are hoped for.

And if they mention him in the assembly, I say: A noble man,

lavish with most of his wealth, sweet in his ways.

I have been rebuked for seeking him out and choosing him

by men, and for the verse that I compose.

They said: Is not water's taste known

from the first bucket by him who drinks his fill and him who takes a draught?

You have tried all that can be tried,

and vied with what no mortal ever could rival.

You spoke, and spoke well, leaving

no meaning for a maker of poems to pursue.

You performed a service which, had it been done for another,

would have made him say with delight: The best kindness is prompt.

So leave aside a patron whose nearness brings you nothing,

and condemn a cousin whose bounty does not reach you.

Does a cloud benefit a man of Najd, when his land gets

its mightiest thunderbolts, while the lowlands get its downpour?

I said: Gently! He is the son of Muhammad,

though his aloofness and heedlessness have hurt me.

And I still hope for a following shower from his clouds,

to make the valley lush and its herbage green.

I say to a band of leading men among my father's sons,

while brimming streams of tears come rushing from my eye-corners:

How long, cousins, shall we shut our eyes upon grit,

and keep deferring greatness, putting it off?

Is evil anything but what you see? Yet at times it

grows worse, till later evil makes the present evil forgotten.

Can a man of high honor shoulder weighty resolve,

yet have a shoulder too weak to bear injustice?

Know this: after wealth and honor have been stripped away,

there is no staying—and a man must eat his provisions.

And after giving enemies power over our lives

and our wealth, there is no good left for us to hope for.

Our brothers have obeyed against us every spiteful man,

foul in his hidden intentions, whose falsehood resembles truth.

They have accepted the words of those who said that we

are an enemy whose treachery is feared when opportunity offers.

Where are these people's wits, when they accept such words?

A deficient mind and a complete one are not equal.

Was it we who built this glory, or someone else

who built it? The worst man is he whose servant is disappointed.

Was Abd Allah the father of any people

besides us, that they should be favored and their intercessions succeed?

I swear: this bodes no good, and it

is only the first of what decreed fate will bring.

Whoever listens to a spiteful man's words against his own people

will have his vital spots struck just as the enemy wishes.

Not everyone who displays affection is a sincere well-wisher,

just as not every lightning flash proves true to one hoping for rain.

One subdued may display the deepest affection,

while his nooses and sickles lie spread.

Whoever does not treat his own people with honor

will face from his enemies what he cannot withstand.

Whoever does not lay his flesh open to blue spearheads

will have his domain violated and his wives enslaved.

Whoever has no discerning man to manage his affairs,

one who cares for him, will soon be mourned by his bereaved women.

How many a valiant man neglected prudence, so that

his enemies and intimates joined to bring him death.

A man is nothing but his mind and his tongue

when he speaks—not his cloaks and undergarments.

    فَأَيُّ حُسامٍ لَم تُرَصَّع حَمائِلُه

    Rise, then, with resolve, and put me at the fore;

for what keen sword has not had its straps set with jewels?

March with success's bird as your omen, for I see

the herald of exile has arrived, and its signs are plain.

I guarantee ruin for any town

where the basest men of every clan are favored.

It shows a man's poor judgment to honor a braying beast

when his neighing horse has died of emaciation at the tethering-stakes.

Whoever neglects the sword, relying on a stick,

will lament his opponent's sword-edge striking him.

Nothing adorns the spear except its point,

just as nothing adorns the hand except its fingers.

If you reject my counsel, I am not among you

the first auspicious leader whose tribes defied him.

I shall impose my resolve upon the days, though they resist,

and surely win from them what I hope for.

    تُواصِلُ أَسبابَ العُلى مَن يُواصِلُه

    For close by, among my men, is a crowned man;

the bonds of greatness reach whoever keeps ties with him.

His domain is unassailable; no people frighten his grazing herds,

nor do enemies keep him from anything he seeks.

To you, Imad al-Din, a necklace of jewels,

brought to perfection: no matching necklace can be offered.

I had come to loathe poetry, disdaining

its would-be buyer, since the ignorant cheapen pearls.

And I deemed myself too noble to praise a blameworthy man,

whose midwives gave us glad tidings of every foul trait.

But for you I would not utter a verse, even should there swell

a sea of poetry, its shore following the waves.

But I have for you a love and kinship

that stir me; one who maintains kinship is praised.

And I loathe praising anyone but a lord

whose father is mine—even should his shoulder jostle the stars.

May you ever be the clan's elder, a refuge

to turn to when time's earthquakes sweep over all.
