Leave the dwelling in Bahrain, its quarters fading away,

And drive her on, though only her saddle-straps remain.

    أَلا إِنَّما أَشقى الرِجالِ طَمُوعُها

    Leave talk of covetous hopes and wishes;

Indeed, the greediest men are the most wretched.

    فَخَيرٌ لَها مِن ذَلِكَ الشِبعِ جُوعُها

    Do not envy men there their fullness;

Their hunger is better for them than such fullness.

For one who bends over the food alone cannot escape,

Once full, a retching fit he will disgorge.

If fortune turns her back, then show her

Your back; nothing is harder than bringing her back.

    وَهَوِّن فَخَفّاضُ المَباني رَفُوعُها

    Do not exhaust yourself counseling one whose judgment has vanished;

Take things lightly: he who lowers buildings also raises them.

Perhaps summits will fall and low places rise

Thereby; for creation's great raiser also brings it low.

    فَما الرابِحُ المَغبوطُ إِلّا بَيُوعُها

    Sell off in loathing the home of humiliation and harm;

Only its seller makes a profit worth envying.

Do not rely, through weakness, baseness, and humiliation,

On their saying: men's tyranny is their downfall.

When has a tyrant's fall brought his slain victim back to life?

Indeed, how often have the timorous brought souls to ruin!

Enough of reproaching the worthless, for they

Are too paltry and abject for any brilliance to be hoped from them.

    وَهَل عَن ضِعافِ المُولِ يُغني شُعُوعُها

    For a glimmer spun by their ignorance has deceived them;

But can their glitter compensate for their scant means?

When the birds of good fortune flee a village,

Their alighting can be hoped for only at a loss.

You threaten with scorching sands a people whose roots

Have grown in flame since they sprouted—and so have their branches.

You seek to make bridges bolt with date-stones,

Though the tread of mules above them does not shake them.

And you clothe in the tunics of praise bands of men,

Dwarfs whose outstretched arms cannot span those robes.

May I be rid of men whose defiance is not against oppression

When angered, or whose compliance is not for a rightful claim.

    وَتَأمَنُ مِن مَكروهِها إِذ تَروعُها

    Whenever you fail to frighten them, you spend the night afraid of them;

You are safe from their harm when you frighten them.

Ah, my noblest people, when shall I see

Horses bearing us headlong, their flanks pressed close?

Upon them, young men of ours, of the Abdali line,

Their laggard bold, their most withholding generous.

Their forerunners sent ahead among women in litters,

Beautiful to behold, their saffron stains fragrant.

They have left Nakhlayn behind and turned,

Their migrant bands, toward Syria's towns or the land of Iraq.

By my life, better than Murgham's orchards

Along Dhu al-Majari are Najd's acacias and its ben trees.

And better than the Jawhariyya River's water, even if clear,

Is a scant remnant in a sandy well, with no hope of its welling up.

And better than Marwazi cloth and lalis silk in Qatif

Are coarse cloaks in the valley of Tayy, and its leather mats.

And better than rabbitfish flesh in Awal, and kingfish,

Are spiny-tailed lizards and rats with many burrows.

As for our share in her sea, whose water is salt,

And in her lofty palms, whose trunks tower high,

We have nothing of the pearls but their shells,

And nothing of the date-clusters but their caps.

Away with a land whose bounty goes to its enemy,

And a people content with the worst of every share!

Resolve, then! Long have we placated the enemy,

And long have they delighted in rain that brings us harm.

For we have a way out from humiliation's watering-place

To another; the earth has many regions.

There is no home save where foes are humbled,

And no honor save where their submission is plain.

They will learn—but when knowledge no longer helps—

Those ignorant men—who harms them and who benefits them.

When horses with tousled forelocks advance, gathered

Against them by battle's firebrands, who wheel them about.

Are we not the clan's defenders, while the cavalry cries out,

When its cowards flee in fear of battle's blaze?

Through us the dreaded frontier is defended, and with us

Are generosity's gardens, whose blossoms grow more beautiful.

When we declare our lineage, we count forefathers

Whose sandal-straps are the equals of men's heads.

And among us there has always been—none disputes it—

The springtime of all Maʿadd, and its dwelling grounds.

Whenever a mountain of glory raises lofty peaks,

You never find us without its summits in our ranks.

    فَيَأمَنُ جانِيها وَيهدى مَرُوعُها

    Maʿadd's nobility seeks refuge with us when it offends;

Its offender finds safety, and its frightened one is guided.

Through us the sparrow devours hawks, and robbers fear

The sting of the Akhtaliyyas, even their limping ones.

Oblivion upon Bahrain, though they should speak of ripening

Palms in its valley and richly yielding crops.

Is all that for anyone but the enemy and a faction

Whose leaders and followers will suffer because of it?

They deliberately split her staff; may it never reunite,

Nor its fractures heal, except to their hurt.

By your life, my eye is no eye if these ever coincide:

The sleep of the enemy's helpers and its own.

If my people accept my humiliation, I have sufficiency

In myself; he who brings on deaths also wards them off.

Whenever I am not at a loss in a land, I am,

In trouble, a rover of deserts, a strider across them.

A heart longing for honor escorts me,

And a soul with a fierce yearning for the heights.

I hold it too noble ever to refuse

A rightful duty, or submit to oppression.

And I am never one to exult in prosperity,

Nor ever one to panic in adversity.

I shall lodge it in the grave, or on a mountain's summit

Of glory, whose ascent defeats every climber.

And my quest for high honor is no inheritance from collateral kin,

That my steps should fall short of it and I neglect it.

I owe it the striving of the noble; and if I die,

Then its giver is its taker, and the one who wrests it away.
