Oh, the waste of praise that traveled concerning you
on reciters' tongues like the courses of stars!
أَلاoh لَيتَنيwould that I مِنfrom قَبلَهِbefore it كُنتُhad been مُفحَماًunable to compose verse
وَلَمand not يَجرِhad flowed مِنfrom لَفظيmy speech بِهِwith it خَطُّthe writing of كاتِبِa scribe
Would that, before it, I had been unable to make verse,
and no scribe had written it down from my words!
فَقَدfor indeed كانَit was مِنّيfrom me مِثلَlike ماwhat قالَhe said فَلتَةًa thoughtless slip
وَماand not اِعتَضتُI received in exchange مِنهُfrom it غَيرَanything but عَضِّbiting الرَواجِبِthe knuckles
It was a thoughtless slip from me, as the saying goes,
and my only recompense was biting my knuckles.
لَئِنeven if كُنتُI am لاmay not كُنتُمyou exist قَذىًgrit فيin عُيونكُمyour eyes
فَإِنّيfor I شِفاءٌam healing لِلعيونِfor the eyes الضَوارِبِthrobbing
If I am—may you cease to be—grit in your eyes,
I am a cure for throbbing eyes.
وَإِنand if كانَis ماwhat نِلتُمyou attained عَظيماًgreat لَدَيكُمin your eyes
فَقَدfor indeed يَعظُمُmay look great العصفورُthe sparrow فيin عَينِthe eye of خائِبِa disappointed man
If what you gained seems great to you,
a sparrow may look great to a disappointed man.
أَغرَّكُمُhas deceived you دَهرٌan age خَسيسٌbase أَحَلَّكُمthat installed you
مَراتِبَin ranks ماnot كانَتwere لَكُمyours مِنamong مَراتِبِranks
Has a base age deceived you, installing you
in ranks that were never yours?
تَظُنّونَهاyou think them أَهرامَthe pyramids of مِصرَEgypt وَإِنَّهاyet they indeed
لَأَوهىare surely frailer بِناءًin construction مِنthan بيوتِthe houses of العَناكِبِspiders
You think them the pyramids of Egypt, yet they
are frailer in construction than spiders' houses.
أَلَيسَis it not الحَجاreason آجِرُّهاtheir bricks وَبَلاطُهُand its paving

قَذىscum of الماءِwater مَطبوخاًbaked بِنارِwith the fire of الحُباحِبِfireflies
To reason, are not their bricks and paving
water-scum baked in a firefly's flame?
رُوَيداًeasy now بَنيsons of المُستَفرِماتِwomen using vaginal astringents فَغائِبٌfor an absent thing
وَعَدتُكُمُI promised you إِنجازَهُits fulfillment غَيرُis not غائِبِabsent
Easy, sons of women who use vaginal astringents! A thing still unseen,
whose fulfillment I promised you, is not far away.
فَواoh then أَسَفاًwhat grief إِنif مِتُّI die لَمhave not أوطِmade be trodden أَرضَكُمyour land
كَتائِبَsquadrons of خَيلٍhorses تَهتَديguided بِكَتائِبِby squadrons
Alas, if I die before making your land bear the tread of
squadrons of horses guided by squadrons!

They show you night stars at noon when they appear,
bounding through a spreading night of dust,

with every youth whose resolve is sharper than the sword
when the ranks clash, though the sword is keen of edge.
فَلَستُthen I am not اِبنَthe son of أُمِّthe mother of المَجدِglory إِنif لَمnot تَزركُمُvisit you
مسوَّمَةٌmarked chargers بَينَamong القَناlances وَالقَواضِبِand cutting swords
I am no son of glory's mother unless there visit you
marked chargers amid lances and cutting swords,
بِطَعنٍwith thrusts يُنسّيmaking forget الكَلبَthe dog مَنكُمamong you هَريرَهُhis growling
وَيَترُكهُand leaving him يَضغوwhimpering ضُغاءَlike the whining of الثَعالِبِfoxes
with thrusts that make the dog among you forget his growling,
leaving him whining like the foxes,
وَضَربٍand blows يَقولُsays الأَحمَقُthe fool البَلعُgluttonous عِندَهُat them
أَلاoh لَيتَنيwould that I بِالدّوِّin the desert بَعضُwere one of الأَرانِبِthe hares
and blows at which the gluttonous fool says,
'Would that I were one of the desert hares!'
قَضىmay decree اللَّهُGod ماwhat تَستَوجِبونُyou deserve فَساقَهُand drive it
إِلَيكُمto you فَماfor not أَبغيI seek لَكُمfor you غَيرَother than واجِبِwhat is due
May God decree what you deserve and drive it
upon you; I seek for you nothing but your due.
أَشَرياًbitter colocynth? عَلىtoward الأَدنىthose nearest وَأَرياًand honey عَلىtoward العِدىthe enemies
وَذُلّاًand humiliation لذيfor one possessing صِدقٍtruthfulness وَعِزّاًand honor لِكاذِبِfor a liar
Bitter colocynth to your kin, yet honey to your enemies,
and humiliation for the truthful, but honor for the liar?
تَعِستُمmay you perish وَأَدّىand may exact اللَّهُGod ماwhat فيis upon رِقابِكُمyour necks
أَماis there not لِإِلَهٍtoward God فيكُمamong you مِنany مُراقِبِone mindful
Perish! May God exact what hangs upon your necks.
Is none among you mindful of God?
تَجمَّعَhas banded together ليagainst me عَبدٌa slave زَنيمٌbaseborn وَفاجِرٌand a libertine
أَثيمٌsinful وَأَبّارٌand a slanderer عَظيمُgreat in النَيارِبِmalicious gossip
A bastard slave and a libertine have banded against me,
a sinner and a slanderer full of malicious gossip.
وَأَنساهُمُand made them forget ماwhat يُعقِبُbrings upon الغَيُّerror أَهلَهُits followers
شَقاهُمtheir wretchedness فَلَمّاso not yet يَنظُرُواhave they considered فيinto العَواقِبِthe consequences
What error brings upon its followers was blotted from their minds
by their wretchedness; they have yet to consider the consequences.
فأَولىso woe لَهُمto them أَولىwoe أَماindeed إِنَّsurely خَيرَهُمthe best of them
نِجاراًin stock وَنَفساًand in soul مَنone who نُمِيwas traced لِلمُعائِبِto disgrace
Woe to them, and woe! Indeed, their best
in stock and soul is one whose lineage is traced to disgrace.
وَلَمand not أَرَhave I seen آذىmore harmful لِاِمرِئٍto a man مِنthan جِوارِهمliving beside them
وَلاand not سِيَّماleast حُرٍّa freeborn man كَريمِnoble in المَناصِبِancestry
I have seen nothing more harmful to a man than living beside them,
especially a freeborn man of noble ancestry.
وَدِدتُI wished وَقَدand indeed جاوَرتُهُمI lived beside them أَنَّthat مَنزِليmy home
بِحَيثُwhere ثَوَتdwelt غُبسُthe gray الذِئابِwolves السَواغِبِfamished
Having lived beside them, I wished my home
were where the hungry gray wolves dwell.
فَإِنَّfor indeed الذِّئابَthe wolves الطُّلسَdusky أَندىare more generous أَنامِلاًin fingers
وَأَكفىand more helpful وَأَوفىand more faithful ذِمَّةًin covenant لِلمُصاحِبِto a companion
For dusky wolves are more generous of finger,
more helpful, and more faithful in their pledge to a companion.
فَماfor not زالَhas ceased ناديهمtheir assembly عَجاجاًa dust storm وَماand what لَهُمthey possess

رَجاجاًworthless refuse وَواديهُمand their valley أُجاجَbitter in المَشارِبِdrinking waters
Their assembly has ever been a dust storm, and all they possess
worthless refuse, their valley bitter to drink from.
