Make your mounts kneel: these are the domes of glory and generosity.

And rest at noon: all eminence is in these tents.

Spare the noble camels both hard galloping and trotting,

For you have reached the kings of Arabs and non-Arabs.

Beyond Banu Fadl there is nothing to seek—

No wealth for the hopeful, no honor for the oppressed.

They are the kings; they are the masters of kings,

And kingship has flourished only in their houses.

You have alighted with their most illustrious and noblest,

Above their chiefs among us, for all their nobility.

Look at this man with your own eyes: he is their lord,

Of them all, and lord of Adnan and the rest.

This valiant lord, Imad al-Din, is the noblest of those

Who are called upon and looked to, the best of all mankind.

    هَذا المُؤَمَّلُ هَذا كاشِفُ الغُمَمِ

    This is the king whose omen is auspicious;

This is the hoped-for man, this the dispeller of sorrows.

    فَما يُشائِمُهُ فَقرٌ إِلى الدِّيَمِ

    This is he whose bounty puts the rain-bringing stars to shame;

So no need of steady rains attends him.

This is he who wrests the tyrant's lifeblood

By force, leaving him mere flesh upon a butcher's block.

This is he whose eloquence, had Quss witnessed it,

Would have made him say: 'By my life, this is wisdom's mine.'

This is he whom, had he seen him in his majesty,

Kisra would have ransomed from death and pain.

This is he whom, had Zuhayr the poet encountered him

One day, he would have praised instead of Harim.

Then greet him after kissing the earth, and say:

'Welcome, welcome, reviver of valor and generosity!

Welcome, lord of all the people of the earth,

And best of kings over those outside and within the sanctuary!

Welcome, welcome to him whose radiant brow

Spares night travelers in darkness any need of the full moon!

Welcome to him and to this day! The two,

If compared, are best among days and peoples.'

Magnify God and thank Him for this, and say:

'God is greatest!' Prostrate yourself without reserve.

God bless Imad al-Din—what a king!

What noble character and dispositions are his!

Such serenity that, were it to spread through the sea, its billows

Would not stir in the winds of Ad or Iram.

And such awe that, had Solomon the prophet confronted

With it the devils, bringers of possession and madness,

They would have labored on in building, shackled for him,

And diving, until the dead were raised from decayed bones.

And such courage that, had the forest lion its slightest share,

It would have ranged the open lands, not sheltered in thickets.

A king who resolutely guarded the realm's borders

With the sword, not a reed pen dipped in ink pools.

The sword's stroke is more effective against the foe, even

When its edges are blunted, than the pen's stroke.

    Before his might, horsemen scatter,

Like a flock of sandgrouse fleeing a ravenous falcon.

How many a chieftain in the gloom of battle dust he has left

A torn corpse, with a white sword or a blue spear blazing like fire!

In a battle where whoever escaped in flight cried:

'How rich your year, you vultures—may you never enjoy it!'

The horses know his onslaught in battle,

Where towering dust seizes men by the throat.

No sooner do they sense him than they turn in rout:

The wolf's breath is never hidden from sheep.

How often, while champions wheeled, he struck with his sword

A blazoned warrior, a mountain in his clan's assembly!

Since horses wheeled beneath his stroke, he has hobbled them

With nothing but the hair of champions' beards and locks.

The districts of Bahrayn have flourished and boasted

Through him over Marib in the ages of old.

    وَلا يَقِرُّ دَمٌ إِلّا بِسَفكِ دَمِ

    With his justice and spilled blood he fortified them;

Blood is never made secure except by shedding blood.

God bless his father's insight when he gazed at him

In the cradle, not yet able to utter either 'no' or 'yes.'

As he cooed to him, he said to his family:

'Trust this radiant one, lofty in renown and aspiration.'

He gave great gifts, and his ambition rose toward glory

Before a beard traced his cheeks or his new teeth emerged.

At ten years old he led them; you would think them

The billows of a crashing sea, driven onward by the wind.

With them he trampled every land of the enemy,

As a Yemeni treads hides being stripped.

Nor did he halt until he had left no king

With a defended domain there, or a sanctuary.

His ambition gave him the kingdom of al-Ahsa,

And the resolve of one clear-sighted in counsel, not blind.

If they say, 'That came through being chosen,' then is

Anything chosen for striking but the keen, cleaving blade?

Unflagging, he drove them onward in a mass,

Surging like a torrent, Yemen's overwhelming flood.

They did not kneel to rest until their dust swallowed

Every fortress and stronghold built in al-Khatt.

He did not shed his armor until he seized its territory

By force, and twinned it with nearby al-Ahsa.

He had not stretched his hand from there toward Hormuz

And Harik before they offered a suppliant's palm.

O house of Fadl, may God kill your envier

With his own rage, and spare you a stumbling foot.

How often does Time, in your very midst, chew

My flesh and drain my remaining blood like thirst-stricken camels!

Is it noble conduct that I should thirst, while your pool

Is for dog and wolf, for rats and lambs?

And that a man whose father was my father's slave is favored

Over me, while my kinship is severed among you?

Far be it from Ibn Masud, the exalted king, to let

Me be rebuffed while sons of nursemaids and servants are preferred!

A youth whom every gallant forebear raised to eminence,

Each defending honor, faithful to covenants and pledges.

Who is like Masud, the valiant chief? And who

Like Ahmad, looked to for valor and generosity?

Who rivals Ibn Fadl in his noble deeds,

Abu Sinan, people's succor in desperate trials?

    فَمَن بَغى الفَخرَ فَليَفخَر بِمثلِهِمُ

    The best of Qays ibn Aylan are his maternal kin;

Whoever seeks pride should take pride in men like these.

A people whose father is Sinan, best of those

A woman bore, or who led steeds prancing in bridles.

O Abu Ali, answer without hesitation

The voice of a man whose devotion to your eminence is beyond suspicion.

Toward you, hastening from al-Ahsa, I was spurred

By the resolve of kings and a fortune free of flaws.

I knew for certain that right guidance accompanied me,

So I fear no gnashing of teeth in regret.

How many a wilderness I crossed to reach you, where

The guide's heart wanders lost in fear and weariness!

And many a foaming sea, where Death seems to ride,

    Hurling rolling, crashing waves!

There I said to my soul, as it was near tears,

Amid waves, some routing and some routed:

    وَالمَوتُ آتٍ وَما تَلقَينَ كَالحُلُمِ

    'Be still: whatever He wills, He brings to pass;

Death is coming, and what you suffer is like a dream.'

Whoever makes the company of kings his aim

Presses through terrors like a raging, full-grown camel.

It would be no strange thing if I visited his presence

Hastening on my head, rather than on my feet.

    وَقَد دَعَوتُ وَما في السَمعِ مِن صَمَمِ

    I have arrived, and wealth is not lacking;

I have called, and your hearing is not deaf.

Here I am today, O best of kings, still myself,

And you are you—yet nothing has ever lasted.

There is none but you whom we invoke and summon

Against what confronts us from our crushing age.

May the horizons of the lands never be empty of you,

Nor you ever lack blessings coming upon blessings.
