بُنَيَّmy dear son مُذsince غِبتَyou went away عَنfrom عَينَيَّmy eyes ماnot عَرَفَتhave known
غمضاًsleep وَلاnor بِتُّI spent the night إِلّاexcept ساهِراًwakeful دَنِفاailing
My dear son, since you left my sight, my eyes have not known
sleep, nor have I spent a night but wakeful and ailing.
وَلاnor سَمِعتُI heard بِشَخصٍof someone آبَreturned مِنfrom سَفَرٍa journey
إِلّاexcept that حَنَنتُI yearned وَأَعلَنتُand I voiced aloud البُكاweeping أَسَفاin sorrow
Nor have I heard of anyone returning from a journey
without yearning and weeping aloud in sorrow.
قَضىcompleted أَخُوكَyour brother حُسَينٌHusayn نَحبَهُhis allotted span وَمَضىand passed away
وَهَلand is there سِواكَother than you تراهُyou deem him مِنهُin his place لِيfor me خَلَفاa successor
Your brother Husayn met his end and passed away;
and who but you, do you think, can take his place for me?
فَماso never مَرَرتُI passed بِقَبرٍby a grave مُذsince فُجِعتُI was bereaved بِهِof him
إِلّاexcept that وَصِحتُand I cried out بِأَعلىat the top of الصَوتِthe voice وَاO!
So, since I was bereaved of him, I have passed no grave
without crying at the top of my voice, 'O, my anguish!'
فَاِرحَمso pity أَباكَyour father فَلوfor if أَبصَرتَyou saw عَبرَتَهُhis tears
وَكُلَّماand whenever كَفَّit ceased مِنfrom شأَنٍa tear duct لَهاbelonging to it وَكَفاit poured
So pity your father—if only you could see his tears,
and how, whenever one tear duct stops, they pour anew.
قَدindeed أَقرَحَhas ulcerated الدَمعُthe tears عَينَيهِhis eyes وَقَدand indeed وَهَنَتhave weakened
مِنهُof him العِظامُthe bones وَأَضحىand became الجِسمُthe body قَدindeed نَحُفاgrew thin
Tears have ulcerated his eyes, and weakness has overtaken
his bones; his body has grown thin.
شَيخٌan old man أَنافَhas passed عَلىbeyond السَبعينَseventy حَلَّdescended بِهِupon him
ثُكلٌbereavement وَشَوقٌand longing فَإِنso if داماthey both endure فَوَاthen alas!
An old man past seventy, upon whom have fallen
bereavement and longing—if they endure, alas, his doom!
إِنif لَمnot يَمُتhe dies خافَhe fears أَنthat يَعمىhe goes blind وَمَنand whoever عَمِيَتwent blind
عَيناهُhis eyes ماتَis dead وَإِنand even if لَمnot يَسكُنِhe dwells in الجَدَفاthe grave
If he does not die, he fears going blind; and one whose
eyes go blind is dead, though he does not dwell in the grave.
بُنَيَّmy dear son ماnot أَنتَyou مِنamong أَهلِthose given to العُقوقِfilial disobedience وَلاnor
عَوَّدتَنيyou have accustomed me مِنكَfrom you إِلّاexcept البِرَّfilial devotion وَاللُطَفاand kindness
My dear son, you are not one to be undutiful, nor
have you ever shown me anything but filial devotion and kindness.
فَرِقَّso be tender لِيtoward me وَاِرثand take pity مِنfor هَمٍّanguish أُكابِدُهُI endure it
شَوقاًlonging إِلَيكَfor you وَحُزناًand sorrow لِلّذيfor the one who سَلَفاhas gone before
So be tender toward me, and pity me for the anguish I endure:
longing for you, and grief for him who has gone before.
وَاِدفَعand drive away بِلُقياكَthrough meeting you عَنّيfrom me وَحشَةًloneliness وَأَسىًand sorrow
عَلىin إِذابَةِmelting جِسمٍa body بالضَنىwith wasting illness اِختلَفَاthe two took turns
And dispel, through our reunion, my loneliness and sorrow,
which take turns melting my body with wasting illness.
وَكُنand be جَوابَthe answer to كِتابيmy letter حينَwhen تَنشُرُهُyou unfold it
وَأمُرand order بِشِدٍّfor saddling up وَلَمّاand not yet تَبلُغِyou reach الطَرَفاthe end
And be yourself the answer to my letter when you unfold it,
and order the saddling before you even reach its end.
وَلاand do not تَكَلَّفburden yourself with لِرِزقٍfor a livelihood غُربَةًexile وَشَقاand hardship
الرِّزقُsustenance آتٍis coming فَلاso do not تَحمِلbear لَهُfor it كَلَفاhardship
And do not burden yourself with exile and hardship for a livelihood;
sustenance will come, so do not shoulder hardship for it.
