O Abu Shuja‘, may God preserve you, king that you are!
But for you, these people would not be human.

I have revived Ibn Qays's forbearance in his lordship,
but you have coupled it with Jassas's daring,
وَعَدلَand the justice of كِسرىKisra وَإِفضالَand the generosity of اِبنِthe son of حارِثَةٍHaritha

I complain to you of separation's anguish after closeness,
and loneliness that arose after companionship.

May God shelter you from my anguish and my unrest,
and from my consuming passion, my sorrow, and my troubled thoughts.

بِالصَفوَةِby the elect one المُجتَبىthe chosen مِنfrom ضِئضِئِthe lineage of الياسِIlyas
I swear an oath whose swearer fears no perjury,
by the elect, chosen from the lineage of Ilyas:
ماnever حالَdeparted وُدُّكَlove for you مِنfrom قَلبيmy heart وَلاnor صَعَدَتrose

My love for you has never left my heart, nor have
my breaths risen in longing for any king but you.
وَإِنَّنيand indeed I بِأَيادٍfor favors مِنكَfrom you سالِفَةٍlong past

And I, for favors from you in days gone by,
offer praise, neither feigning forgetfulness nor forgetting.

عَنّيaway from me إِلَيكُمbe off فَماfor there is no فيin الحَقِّthe truth مِنany باسِharm
Some people reproached me over you, and I told them:
“Away from me; be off! There is no harm in truth.
لَئِنif indeed كَسوتُكُمُI clothed you ظُلماًunjustly مَحاسِنَهُhis virtues
إِنّيindeed I لِبالدُّسمِsurely in the soiled ones مِنamong أَثوابِكُمyour garments كاسِam clad
If I unjustly clothed you in his virtues,
I would indeed be clad in your soiled garments.”
ثُمَّthen اِندَفَعتُI plunged forward خِلالَamong القَومِthe people أُسمِعُهُمmaking them hear

Then I plunged among the people, making them hear
al-Hutay’ah's verse, as he verged on despair:
لَقَدindeed مرَيتُكُمُI stroked you for milk لَوif only أَنَّthat دِرَّتَكُمyour milk-flow

“Indeed, I have tried to milk you—if only your milk
would one day flow at my stroking and coaxing!”

Leave praise for him whose pursuits are not
kissing cups or hoarding moneybags.

If I have charged you with attaining his height,
then I am more exacting in judgment than Shas's brother.

So appease your enemy as best you can, and set about
caulking planks and ferrying water-casks.
يَفديكَmay he ransom you ياO شَمسَsun of دينِthe faith of اللَهِGod كُلُّevery عَمٍblind man

May every blind man ransom you, O sun of God's faith—
blind to noble deeds, ever clothed in shameful ones.
أَماdo you not تَرىsee القَمَرَthe moon المَنحوسَill-omened طَلعَتُهُhis rising

Do you not see the moon, whose rising is ill-omened,
and what he did, neither heedless nor forgetful?

He deliberately undertook a deed not even contemplated by
the lions of Tarj or the wolves of Awtas.

So command the Dragon's Tail to eclipse him,
until he becomes like a paltry rice-cake.
ماnot راقَبَhe heeded اللَهَGod فيregarding حُجّاجِthe pilgrims to كَعبَتِهِHis Kaaba
بَلrather قامَhe set about يَضرِبُreckoning أَخماساًfives لِأَسداسِagainst sixes
He had no regard for God concerning the pilgrims to His Kaaba;
instead, he set about scheming, reckoning fives against sixes.
وَلاnor اِتَّقىdid he fear بَأسَthe might of قُرمٍa mighty bull camel لاno عِرانَnose-peg بِهِin him

Nor did he fear the might of a bull camel with no nose-peg,
for he has always subdued the dry she-camels' stallions.

In his vilest plotting and his guile he has surpassed,
and in his oppression, every slave-dealer and toll-collector.

He has revived his father, by my life; houses rest upon
foundations and footings laid down long ago.

Some people reproached al-Duyaythi for his baseness;
bring al-Duyaythi—upon my eyes and head!

So, O trusted one of God's trusted one, leave upon him
an everlasting wound for which he can find no healer.

And live mighty, praised by your neighbor, so long as there stride
pale camels through a soft-sanded waste of unknown bounds.
