وَتُقطَعُand are severed أَرحاميmy kinship ties وَتُلغىand is disregarded مَوَدَّتيmy affection
وَيُقعَدُand there is sitting بِيover me ماthere بَينَكُمamong you وَيُقامُand rising
That my kinship ties be severed and my affection dismissed,
And my name be bandied about among you?
وَتُذنِبُand commit offenses أَقوامٌpeople فَتُعزىthen are attributed ذُنوبُهاtheir offenses
إِلَيَّto me وَأُلحىand I am reproached عِندَكُمbefore you وَأُلامُand blamed
Others commit offenses, yet their offenses are ascribed
To me; before you I am reproached and blamed.
هَبُونِيَconsider me جاراًa neighbor لِاِبنِto a son of عَمٍّa paternal uncle مُصافِياًsincere in friendship
فَلِلجارِfor the neighbor has مِنكُمfrom you حُرمَةٌinviolable standing وَذِمامُand protection
Consider me a cousin's loyal neighbor,
For a neighbor has inviolable rights and protection from you.
فَكَمfor how many مِنof هُمامٍa noble hero قَدindeed عَفاforgave وَهوَwhile he was مُحرَجٌsorely provoked
وَجادَand freely granted بِصَفحٍforgiveness وَالذُنوبُwhile the offenses عِظامُwere grave
How many a noble man has pardoned, though sorely provoked,
And freely granted forgiveness when the offenses were grave.
وَذُوand one possessing المَجدِglory لاnot يَستَغرِقُexhausts الجَهلُfolly حِلمَهُhis forbearance
وَلَوeven if قَعَدَsat الواشُونَthe slanderers فيهِagainst him وَقامُواand rose
A glorious man's forbearance is not exhausted by folly,
Though slanderers sit and rise against him.
لَقَدindeed كُنتُI was أَرجُوhoping أَنto أُرىbe seen فيin جَنابِكُمyour precincts
وَلِيand I have مِنfrom نَداكُمyour bounty سابِقٌa swift steed وَحُسامُand a keen sword
I had hoped to be seen in your precincts,
With a swift steed and a sword from your bounty.
إِذاif كُنتُI am أَخشاكُمafraid of you وَأَخشىand fear عَدُوَّكُمyour enemy
فَإِنَّthen indeed حَياتيmy life شِقوَةٌmisery وَغَرامُand torment
If I must fear you and also fear your enemy,
Then my life is misery and torment.
فَإِنso if كانَthere was ذَنبٌan offense فَاِترُكُوهُthen leave it لِماto what مَضىhas passed
وَهَلand is هُوَit إِلّاanything but إِذwhen يُعَدُّreckoned كَلامُwords
If there was an offense, leave it to the past;
When reckoned, is it anything but words?
وَوَاللَهِand by God ماnot أَوضَعتُI hurried فيماinto what يُريبُكُمarouses your suspicion
وَلاnor شُدَّwas tightened لِيfor me ياO قَومِmy people فيهِin it حِزامُa saddle-girth
By God, I never hastened into what would make you doubt me,
Nor, my people, was any saddle-girth tightened for me in it.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لمنكُمam surely one of you سُؤتُمُyou were displeased أَوor سُرِرتُمُyou were pleased
إِلىuntil أَنthat يُوارِينيcovers me ثَرىًearth وَرِجامُand gravestones
I am one of you, whether you are displeased or pleased,
Until earth and gravestones cover me.
أَلَستُam I not الَّذيthe one who سَيَّرتُsent forth فيكُمabout you غَرائِباًrare verses
لِكُلٍّeveryone has إِلَيهاfor them إذwhen تَمُرُّthey pass هُيامُpassionate longing
Am I not the one who sent forth rare verses about you,
For which all feel a passion as they circulate?
أَلَيسَis not أَبيmy father فيin الإِنتِسابِlineage أَباكُمُyour father
عَلىalthough أَنَّنيI am عَبدٌa servant لَكمto you وَغُلامُand a page
Is not my father, in lineage, your father,
Though I am your servant and your page?
أَماwas it not اِجتيحَravaged ماليmy wealth فيin هَواكُمlove for you وَأُسهِرَتand was kept awake
بِذاin this السِجنِprison عَينيmy eye وَالعُيونُwhile other eyes نِيامُwere asleep
Was not my wealth ravaged for love of you, and was not sleep denied
My eye in this prison while other eyes slept?
فَراعُواso honor ذِماميmy claim to protection قدرَin proportion to ظَنِّيmy trust فَكُلُّناfor all of us
صَدىًmortal remains عَنafter قَريبٍa short while فيin التُرابِthe dust وَهامُand skulls
Honor my claim to protection as I expect; for all of us
Will soon be decayed remains and skulls in the dust.
فَلَمso not يَبقَremains إِلّاexcept أَنthat تُزَمَّbe bridled رَكائِبيmy riding camels
وَيُصبِحَand stand كَيدٌKayd بَينَناbetween us وَسَنامُand Sanam
Nothing remains but for my riding camels to be bridled,
And for Kayd and Sanam to stand between us.
فَخَيرٌthen better مِنَthan الأَحساءِal-Ahsa إِنif دامَlasts عُتبُكُمyour displeasure
أُشَيٌّUshayy وَوادِىand the valley of مَنهَمٍManham وَنَعامُand Na'am
Better than al-Ahsa, if your displeasure lasts,
Are Ushayy, Wadi Manham, and Na'am.
وَماand not ذاكَthat مِنّيfrom me بِاِختيارٍby choice وَلاnor رِضاًwillingly
وَلَكِنbut يَحِلُّbecomes lawful الشَيءُa thing وَهوَwhile it is حَرامُforbidden
This is no choice of mine, nor what I desire,
But a thing may become lawful though it is forbidden.
وَلَمand not أَرَhave I seen أَشقىmore wretched مِنthan كَريمٍa noble man بِبَلدَةٍin a town
يَجُرُّcommits offenses وَيَجنيand does wrong غَيرُهُsomeone else وَيُلامُwhile he is blamed
I have seen none more wretched than a noble man in a town
Where another commits offenses and crimes, yet he is blamed.
وَإِنَّكُمُand indeed you are دِرعيmy armor وَسَيفيand my sword وَساعِديand my arm
وَتُرسيand my shield إِذاwhen ضَمَّbrings together الكُماةَthe champions زِحامُthe press of battle
You are my armor, my sword, and my strong arm,
And my shield when battle's crush brings champions together.
وَماand not ليdo I have لِسانٌa voice غَيركُمother than you إِنif تَطاوَلَتgrow insolent

عَلَيَّagainst me رِجالٌmen وَاِستَمَرَّand continues خِصامُquarreling
I have no voice but you if men grow insolent
Against me and the dispute persists.
فَلاso do not تَسمَعُواlisten فِيَّagainst me الوُشاةَto the slanderers فَإِنَّهُمfor they are
لَأَكذبُsurely falser مِنthan آلٍa mirage رَأتهُsaw it حِيامُthirsty camels
Do not listen to slanderers against me, for they
Are falser than a mirage seen by thirsty camels.
فَإِنّيَfor indeed I am سَيفٌa sword قاطِعٌkeen-cutting مِنamong سُيُوفِكمyour swords
وَبَعضُand some السُيوفِswords المُنتَقاةِcarefully chosen كَهامُare blunt
I am a keen-cutting sword among your swords,
And some carefully chosen swords are blunt.

إِلَيَّat me نِصالٌspearheads لِلعِدىbelonging to enemies وَسِهامُand arrows
For my kinship with you I was envied, and aimed
At me were enemies' spearheads and arrows.

Blessings upon you, house of Fadl, for you are
Light, while some rulers are darkness.

May there always be sent to you, each day,
From me, whether near or far, a greeting of peace.
