The enemies' spears fall short of your protected domain,
Every man who has no covenant with you,
and their points stumble short of what they seek.
Is checked against his will and is opposed.

Who, then, will convey my message to ʿUqayl and its people,
Gently, O Banū Ka‘b, wake up and reconsider!
though their abode is distant and the place of visitation far away?
Your slaughter will surely be set aflame.

Gently, sons of Kaʿb! Come to your senses and recover
And before the hovering army swoops down,
your judgment before a fire is kindled,
With its wings unleashing sparks at its edges,

And with it rise up ravines as others descend,

Then battle-seasoned war bares the edge of its fang,
Whereby the misguided people will suffer,
and through it one host rises while another falls.
And a people lost in misguidance will perish.

Beware the lion, lest internal strife rouse him against you,
have people swaggered in error, only to perish!
And the protected become exposed and unstable.

So beware the lion; let him not be roused
Whoever provokes the wolf will meet his violent death,
against you by sheep-bleats and goat-cries from among you.
If escape from it does not save him.

For whoever rouses the lion—it leaps bearing his doom

And resolve guides you towards the prince,

And I swear: if you awaken war for an hour
You will wake to a bitter cup imposed upon you,
and a raid gathers you toward the emir,
In which intoxication and wine linger.

you shall surely drink at dawn a cup bitter to you,
It was drunk beforehand by ‘Awf ibn ‘Āmir
whose drunkenness and hangover will long endure for you.
On a morning when oozing blood called for it.

At the hands of his father, not your father,
on the morning rashness and aversion summoned them,
It departed while in it disgrace and diminishment.

from his father's hand, not from your father's,
Does the prince’s clemency upon you deceive you,
so they departed in abasement and humiliation.
His forgiveness, patience and dignity towards you?

Has the emir's sparing you deceived you,
Were it not for honoring the covenant, the homes
with his pardon, forbearance toward you, and dignity?
Of some peoples would become desolate ruins.

But preserving the covenant is intrinsic to him,
peoples' homes turned into deserted wastes.
In it he is singled out among the kings.

Yet keeping the covenant is an innate trait of his,
So leave blindness, ignorance and muddied confusion,
for which he is singled out, unlike other kings.
And embark upon a path illuminated by beacons of guidance!
فَخَلّواso abandon العَمىblindness وَالغَيَّand error وَالطيخَand arrogance وَاِركَبُواand take

So abandon blindness, error, and arrogance, and take
And provoke him not with punishment against you,
a road with a beacon of right guidance upon it.
For the terms of those who oppose the most high are short.
وَلاand do not تَبعَثُوهُprovoke him بِالنَكالِto punishment عَلَيكُمُagainst you

And do not provoke him to punish you,
for the lives of those who oppose his eminence are short.
If his steeds greet you one ill-omened morning,

If his noble steeds strike you at dawn on an ill-fated day,
With neighing, and the stallions of ‘Ajam are stirred,
in successive troops, while the first surge of dust is raised,
You will know that tyranny is ruinous for a man,
لَتَدرُنَّyou shall surely know أَنthat البَغيَaggression لِلمَرءِfor a man مَصرَعٌa downfall

are as Qudhār was among the two clans of Thamūd,

فَحَلَّ بِهِ مِمّا جَناهُ بَوارُ
on the morning he took up the sword and went forth to hamstring,
So the destruction he brought collapsed upon him.
and ruin befell him because of what he had done,
That the path of the wrongdoers is your path,
وَأَنَّand that سَبيلَthe path الظالِمينَof the wrongdoers سَبيلُكُمyour path

and that the wrongdoers' path is your path,
And that Fate has a cup passed round with perdition.
and Time has a cup passed round with death.
Do not assume the prince’s sword with which
