Look closely with me, if you are a watcher of lightning.
Contemplate with me, if you are one who blames the lightning
And if you are no help, do not reproach.
And if you are not a helper, then do not be one who blames

I asked Zarud about the smiling lips of its graceful maidens:
I asked the evening about the smiles of its dawn
Did they mirror its radiance, or did it pass the night mirroring their lovely features?
Did old age tell it or did it recount smiles to me?

لأبهتُ يقظاناً فأُحسبُ نائما
Halt a while, for whenever the protected grounds are mentioned,
I become confused whenever fever is mentioned
I am struck dumb while awake, and so am thought asleep.
I stay awake yet I'm considered sleeping

ركائب لو قصرتُ من لغب السرى

بنا لركبنا دونهن العزائما
Riding camels—if I faltered from the weariness of night travel
If I fell short of visiting the beloved
as they bore us, we would ride our resolves instead of them.
We would have ridden to her without determination

You took fright at Dhat al-Jizʿ, thinking me a warrior;
You panicked with that same panic, I am at war
By God's hand, I was nothing but peaceable.
By God's will I have always been peaceful

غدوت عليكم لا على العيش نادما
You robbed my life of its serenity, yet I
You took away the essence of my life yet I
came to regret you, not life.
Became regretful not of life itself but of you

من النوح ما علّمت تلك الحمائما
So if you bring me to that grove, you will hear
If you take me to those ruins, you will hear
some of the lamentation I taught those doves.
From my wailing what I taught those doves
