لي حشى ما بليت شب سعيره

فعسى غيره حشى استعيره

I have a heart whose blaze flares whenever I suffer.

So perhaps I might borrow another heart in its place.

وعزيز على فقد غرير

اضلعي روضه ودمعي غديره

And grievous to me is the loss of a guileless youth:

My ribs are his garden, and my tears his pool.

مر يحمى بصارم اللحظ ثغراً

كلما شم نوره زاد نوره

He passed by, guarding a mouth with the sword of his glance;

Whenever its blossom is smelled, its radiance increases.

عجبي للمدام في الجفن منه

كيف يبقى ودايماً تكسيره

I marvel at the wine in his eyelid:

How can it remain, with that lid forever breaking?

ولخط بخده غير مقرو

ء وبالخال معجم مسطوره

And at the unread script upon his cheek,

Its written text dotted by the mole.

بت اخشى بعاده ناحل الخص

ر وقد يبعد الجواد ضموره

I spent the night fearing the slender-waisted one's distance,

For a steed's leanness may carry it far away.

ويح مستقسم له مضمر هي

كي لقد فاز قدحه وضميره

Ah, the lot-caster with Hayki secretly in mind—

Indeed, his arrow and his secret intent have won,

مثل ما فاز من عدا ومجير الد

ين من حادث الزمان مجيره

Just as one escapes from foes, with Mujir al-Din

His protector from the calamity of Time.
