  1. واهاً عل عيش مضت سنواته

    وكأنما كانت هي الساعات

    Ah, for a life whose years have passed,

    And it was as though they were mere hours.

  2. والراح ترحم كل هم طالع

    بكواكب أفلاكها الراحات

    And wine has mercy on every rising care,

    With stars whose spheres are the palms of hands.

  3. قابلت بالساقي السماء فاطلعت

    بدراً على كأنها مرآت

    I set the cupbearer opposite the sky, and it raised

    A full moon over me, as though it were a mirror.

  4. الخضر عارضه وواضح ثغره

    عين الحياة وصدغه الظلمات

    The down on his cheek is al-Khiḍr, and his mouth's bright gleam

    Is the Fountain of Life, and his temple-lock is darkness.
