    Is it for traces whose distance wastes you,

    and for dwellings that your tears stream?

    The wind swept its train through them

    for a year, and a dark cloud poured down torrents.

    I stayed there as though I were drinking

    tawny wine from what Babylon had aged.

    But why should an old man weep at a deserted campsite,

    when the whiteness of age has already spread all over him?

    فَما بِها إِذ ظَعَنوا آمِلُ

    It lies empty of those who once were its people;

    so, since they departed, no one remains there in hope.

    And often Sulayma dwelt there,

    like a long-necked doe apart from her herd.

    Why does a sturdy she-camel not console you—

    white-coated, bleeding at the hoof, full-grown,

    lean and hardy, as though her saddle rested upon

    a wild ass with a herd, whose pasture is Aqil?

    O you who ask about our glory,

    you are indeed ignorant of our exploits.

    If news of our battle-days has not reached you,

    then ask, and you will be told, O questioner.

    يَومَ تَوَلّى جَمعُهُ الجافِلُ

    Ask Hujr and his troops about us,

    on the day his fleeing host turned away;

    the day he came upon Sa'd on a battlefield,

    and Kahil wheeled against him from behind.

    So they drove a flock of slender spears against him,

    as though they were blazing flame.

    And ask Amir how it rose above them—

    when we met—the keen, blood-drinking blade.

    And ask Ghassan's host, whom we met

    with a mighty army whose dust-cloud trailed behind.

    My people are the sons of Dudan, men of sound judgment,

    on a day when the empty-wombed one is made to conceive.

    ذي نَفَحاتٍ قائِلٌ فاعِلُ

    How many a mighty chief is among them,

    lavish with gifts, one who speaks and acts;

    فِعلٌ وَمَن نائِلُهُ نائِلُ

    one whose word is truly a word, and whose deed

    is truly a deed, and whose bounty is true bounty;

    who utters words whose like

    makes the drought-stricken land sprout.

    وَلا يُعَقّي سَيبَهُ العاذِلُ

    He denies no petitioner who comes to him,

    nor does a reproacher restrain his bounty;

    and he delivers a spear-thrust on the day of battle

    that leaves the fearless champion stunned.
