Sulayma's dwelling-traces have faded into low mounds,
Desolate, erased by the scouring winds.

In my absence they took, in place of Sulayma and her people,
Ostriches grazing there, and pale antelopes left undisturbed.
وَقَفتُI stood بِهاat it أَبكيI weep بُكاءَthe weeping of حَمامَةٍa dove

I stood there, weeping with the weeping of a dove,
An arak-tree dove calling to doves that roost there.
إِذاwhenever ذَكَرَتshe remembers يَوماًone day مِنَof الدَهرِtime شَجوَهاher sorrow

Whenever, on some day in time, she recalls her sorrow,
On a bough of a tree, she sheds her streaming tears.
سَراةَthe height of الضُحىthe morning حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle عَمايَتيmy bewilderment
تَجَلَّتcleared كَسَوتُI clothed الرَحلَthe saddle وَجناءَa sturdy she-camel تامِكاhigh-humped
At the height of morning, when at last my bewilderment
Cleared, I saddled a sturdy, high-humped she-camel.
كَأَنَّas though قُتوديmy saddle-bows فَوقَabove جَأبٍa stout wild ass مُطَرَّدٍdriven off

As though my saddle-bows rode a stout wild ass driven off
That saw a herd of she-asses rushing along, then sped away.
وَنَحنُand we قَتَلناwe killed الأَجدَلَينِthe two Falcons (al-Ajdalayn) وَمالِكاًand Malik
أَعَزَّهُماthe dearer of them both فَقداًin loss عَلَيكَto you وَهالِكاand in death
And we killed the two Falcons, al-Ajdalayn, and Malik,
The dearer of the two to you, in loss and death.
وَنَحنُand we جَعَلناwe made الرُمحَthe spear قِرناًan adversary لِنَحرِهِto his throat
فَقَطَّرَهُso it toppled him كَأَنَّماas though كانَhe had been وارِكاresting on his hip
And we made the spear an adversary to his throat;
It flung him onto his side, as though he had been reclining.
وَنَحنُand we قَتَلناwe killed مُرَّةَMurra الخَيرِthe Good مِنكُمُfrom among you
وَقُرصاًand Qurs وَقُرصٌand Qurs كانَwas مِمّاfrom among أولَئِكاthose men
And we killed Murra the Good from among you,
And Qurs—and Qurs was one of that company.
وَنَحنُand we صَبَحناwe attacked at dawn عامِراًAmir يَومَthe day أَقبَلواthey advanced
سُيوفاًswords عَلَيهِنَّupon them النَجادُthe baldrics بَواتِكاkeen-cutting
And we assailed Amir at dawn, the day they advanced,
With keen-cutting swords, their baldrics upon them.
عَطَفناwe wheeled back لَهُمtoward them عَطفَthe turning of الضَروسِa biting she-camel فَأَدبَرواso they fled
شِلالاًdriven in rout وَقَدand already بَلَّhad soaked النَجيعُfresh blood السَنابِكاthe hooves
We wheeled upon them like a biting she-camel, and they fled,
Scattered in rout, fresh blood already soaking the hooves.
وَيَومَand on the day of الرِبابِal-Ribab قَدindeed قَتَلناwe killed هُمامَهاits champion
وَحُجراًand Hujr قَتَلناهُwe killed him وَعَمراًand Amr كَذَلِكاlikewise
And on the day of al-Ribab we killed their champion,
And Hujr we killed, and Amr likewise.
وَنَحنُand we قَتَلناwe killed جَندَلاًJandal فيamid جُموعِهِhis hosts
وَنَحنُand we قَتَلناwe killed شَيخَهُhis elder قَبلَbefore ذَلِكاthat
And we killed Jandal amid his hosts,
And we killed his elder before that.
وَأَنتَand you اِمرُؤٌa man أَلهاكَdistracted you دَفٌّa frame drum وَقَينَةٌand a singing-girl
فَتُصبِحُso you wake مَخموراًdrunk وَتُمسيand you reach evening كَذَلِكاlikewise
And you are a man distracted by a frame drum and a singing-girl—
So you wake drunk and reach evening the same—
عَنِfrom الوِترِthe blood-debt حَتّىuntil أَحرَزَput beyond reach الوِترَthe blood-debt أَهلُهُthose owing it
وَأَنتَwhile you تُبَكّيyou lament إِثرَهُin its wake مُتَهالِكاdistraught
From blood-revenge, till those owing it had put it beyond your reach,
While you lament in its wake, distraught.
فَلاso neither أَنتَyou بِالأَوتارِfor the blood-debts أَدرَكتَyou overtook أَهلَهاthose responsible for them
وَلَمnor تَكُyou were إِذwhen لَمdid not تَنتَصِرavenge yourself مُتَماسِكاcomposed
So you neither overtook those responsible for the blood-debts,
Nor, when you failed to avenge yourself, did you keep your composure.
وَرَكضُكَand your galloping لَولاهُbut for it لَقَيتَyou would have met الَّذيwhat لَقواthey met
فَذاكَso that الَّذيwhich أَنجاكَsaved you مِمّاfrom what هُنالِكاthere
And but for your galloping, you would have met what they met;
That was what saved you from what happened there.
ظَلِلتَyou kept تُغَنّيyou sing إِنif أَصَبتَyou acquired وَليدَةًa slave-girl
كَأَنَّas though مَعَدّاًMa'add أَصبَحَتhad come to be فيin حِبالِكاyour snares
You went on singing whenever you won a slave-girl,
As though Ma'add had fallen into your snares.
