اصدر الدين يا شمس المعارف
وياand O بحرsea of الفواضلvirtues والعوارفand benefactions
ويا بحر الفواضل والعوارف
O Sadr al-Din, O sun of learning,
O sun of knowledge, issue forth the religion,
and O sea of virtues and benefactions!
O sea of virtues and spiritual insights.
لقدindeed ارختyou chronicled للأسلامfor Islam مجداًglory
لقد ارخت للأسلام مجداً
بهit اعترفacknowledged الموافقthe supporter والمخالفand the opponent
به اعترف الموافق والمخالف
You have indeed chronicled glory for Islam,
You have made Islam glorious,
which supporter and opponent alike have acknowledged,
With which the concordant and dissenter concur.
بتأليفthrough a written work كترصيفlike arranging اللئاليpearls
بتأليف كترصيف اللئالي
فماso how أبهىsplendid لئاليهits pearls الرصائفset side by side
فما أبهى لئاليه الرصائف
through a work like pearls set side by side;
With a compilation like strands of pearls -
so how splendid are its closely set pearls!
How beautiful are its interwoven strands!
حدائقهits gardens النواضرverdant مثمراتfruit-bearing
حدائقه النواضر مثمرات
بهاin them ابتهجتrejoiced نواظرناour eyes القواطفfruit-gathering
بها ابتهجت نواظرنا القواطف
Its verdant gardens bear fruit,
Its fresh gardens bear fruit,
in which our fruit-gathering eyes have rejoiced.
With which our keen sights delighted.
فأنتfor you are البحرthe sea جوهرهits gems ثمينprecious
فأنت البحر جوهره ثمين
نميرsweet and pure الوردwater for drinking يرويquenches the thirst of كلevery راشفsipper
نمير الورد يروي كل راشف
For you are the sea, whose gems are precious,
You are the sea whose essence is precious,
sweet to drink, quenching every sipper.
The spring of roses quenching all who draw near.
جمعتyou gathered بهin it الفوائدuseful insights باختصارconcisely
جمعت به الفوائد باختصار
فقدso indeed راقتdelighted فوائدهits useful insights الطرائفnovel
فقد راقت فوائده الطرائف
In it you gathered useful insights concisely;
You have gathered benefits with conciseness,
so its novel insights have indeed delighted.
So its benefits are pleasing subtleties.
وقدand indeed أحسنتyou excelled فيin نشرsetting forth المزاياmerits
وقد أحسنت في نشر المزايا
وترتيبand arranging الخصائصdistinctive qualities للخلائفfor succeeding generations
وترتيب الخصائص للخلائف
And you have excelled in setting forth merits
You have excellently spread the advantages
and arranging distinctive qualities for succeeding generations.
And arranged the attributes for successors.
يشوقstirs longing in المسلمينMuslims إذاwhen تلوهthey read it
يشوق المسلمين إذا تلوه
لأيامfor the days of العلىglory الغرradiant السوالفbygone
لأيام العلى الغر السوالف
It stirs Muslims' longing when they read it
It makes Muslims yearn when recited
for the radiant, bygone days of glory.
For the noble days of old.
وخيرand the best of الكتبbooks اثاراًin influence كتابa book
وخير الكتب اثاراً كتاب
بهthrough it تذكوglow الظمائرconsciences والعواطفand feelings
به تذكو الظمائر والعواطف
And the best of books in influence is one
The best book in traces is one
through which consciences and feelings glow.
With which ardent souls are reminded and passions stirred.
فدامso may it endure ضياءthe light of علمكyour knowledge وهوwhile it يجلوdispels
فدام ضياء علمك وهو يجلو
ظلامthe darkness of الجهلignorance حيثwherever الجهلignorance عاكفabides
ظلام الجهل حيث الجهل عاكف
So may the light of your knowledge endure, as it dispels
May the light of your knowledge last shining
the darkness of ignorance wherever ignorance abides.
Dispelling the darkness of ignorance wherever it lingers.
فالأسلامfor Islam منكfrom you اجلthe noblest ذخرtreasure
فالأسلام منك اجل ذخر
وياand O نعمexcellent is المساعدthe helper والمساعفand the giver of aid
ويا نعم المساعد والمساعف
For Islam has in you its noblest treasure,
For Islam you are the greatest treasure,
and what an excellent helper and succorer you are!
O excellent helper and multiplier!
