أيها الراكب المرحل في السير

نجاة من المهارى وخودا

نجاة من المهارى وخودا

O rider pressing onward on your journey,

O traveler who journeys on,

on a swift, long-striding Mahri she-camel,

Give greetings of deliverance to our noble loved ones,

قل لأحبابنا الكرام علينا

قل لأحبابنا الكرام علينا

ان نسيتم فما نسينا العهودا

ان نسيتم فما نسينا العهودا

tell our loved ones, so dear to us:

Say to them, "Though you forget, we remember our promise,

If you have forgotten, we have not forgotten the pledges.

Our hearts forbid only rest from thoughts of you,

ما منعنا القلوب الا سلواً

ما منعنا القلوب الا سلواً

عنكم والعيون الا هجودا

عنكم والعيون الا هجودا

We denied our hearts nothing but forgetfulness

Our eyes only shedding tears."

The fire of yearning is fed by tears.

Would that companionship between us last,

ان يدم بيننا ولا دام بين

لم نجد في الزمان عيشاً رغيدا

لم نجد في الزمان عيشاً رغيدا

If our separation endures—and may no separation endure—

Not finding in these times a happy life,

we shall find no life of ease in this world.

Grief nearly destroyed me for the home so far away,

كاد يقضي الاسى عليّ لبعد

Grief nearly killed me because of the distance

Were it not for my hope that I might yet return.
