O dwelling of the beloved upon al-Abraq,
The beloved passed by lightning's flash
May long-lasting, limpid rain water you,
Offering you sweet life's drink

And may the tender breeze woo your garden,
And courted your garden, so gentle the breeze
Wafting fragrance for whoever breathes it in.
Exuding fragrance for one who inhales

صحيحاً عن المدنف الشيق
Cooing birds recount the tale of passion,
Night birds recount tales of love
Faithfully, from the lovesick, yearning one.
Truthfully from the melodious singer

Yes, and may God protect the bestowers of bounty
The bygone, delightful time of love.

They decreed passion for us and passed away,
It decreed love for us, then departed
And left behind the lingering trace of burning love.
Leaving fiery embers of passion

مناهل بالهجر لم تمذق
Nights when union had pure
Nights wherein we hoped for union
Wellsprings never diluted by estrangement.
But only tasted separation's springs

فلم نخش عينا ولم نتق
And good fortune had indeed distracted the watcher from us,
And fortune neglected to watch over us
So we feared no eye and took no precautions.
So we feared no eyes, and took no heed

Is it true that hearts meet,
Is it not true that hearts should meet
While, despite our longing, we do not meet?
While we in yearning cannot meet?

So, Sa‘d, repeat the tale of the beloved
O fortune, repeat the words of the beloved
For a captive bound fast in love's bondage.
For one enchained by love's shackles

And soothe my heart with praise of the Legatee,
And revive my heart by praising the counselor
So it may be quenched by his pure, sweet-flowing water.
That it may be sated by his refreshing chains

The gardens grow sweet through praise of him,
The gardens are fragrant with his virtues
In fragrance—and without him they would give off no scent.
With his scent, though lacking it they would not be fragrant

Would not shine with the sun of guidance.
By the sun of direction would not have shone

O Father Hasan, pride of guidance
So it came to stand at the summit of al-Ablaq.
Thus he reached the peak of ascendance

متىwhenever يجرhe runs فيon حلبةa racecourse يسبقhe takes the lead
متى يجر في حلبة يسبق
Do any people hope to go as far as a front-runner
Shall a people hope for precedents
Who takes the lead whenever he runs on a racecourse?
When will he race in a race he precedes?
