Neither the garden whose soil steady, pouring rains have watered,
The garden did not flourish with lushness, nor did the valley overflow with water,
So that its sweet, fragrant, breeze-borne scent spreads,
Yet the gentle breeze diffused its sweet fragrance,

Neither did the brook flow with precious gems and jewels,
The beholders, arrayed and strung in order,
Arranged systematically for viewers.

More beautiful and pleasant to hearing and sight,
Than this eminent scholar's beautiful interweaving of half-verses.
Than the beautiful pages of this eminent scholar.

So whenever my gaze returns to it, it renews in me
Whenever I glance upon it, it renews for me,
The thirsty one's longing for a draught of sweet virtues.
A yearning and thirst to read this fine discourse.

If a meeting occurred, I would say: 'That wine has made
Were we to meet, I would say that gentle wind intoxicated,
Minds drunk on it, with no cupbearer but the pen.'
The minds, and nothing led but the pen.

Verse that ripples like rain in harmonious flow,
A rhyme flowing smoothly like rainfall in harmony,
Yet many an eloquent poem lacks harmony.
Though some eloquent rhyme may not be harmonious.

Attests the excellence of one noble in rank and aspiration!
Signs of noble rank and determination.

With his eloquent meanings and rhetoric adorned,
With enchantment; and from his verse he has brought words of wisdom.
Enchanted, and with his poetry endowed with wisdom.

Cultured, adorned with virtues,
The neck of eminence with an unbroken necklace.
Of distinguished lineage, with an unbroken chain.

والعلم اشهر من نار على علم
So his renown travels farther across the horizons than a proverb,
Remembrance thus spreads through the horizons of one like him
And the scholar is more renowned than a fire upon a mountain.
And knowledge more renowned than fire upon a flag.

O you who recount his merits, speak without hesitation,
For his excellence is a sea where every thirsty one is quenched.
For praising his ocean, every thirsty one may drink.

And legal rulings have seen no judge other than him.
And none but he in laws has wisdom seen.

His legal opinion, the truth within it unconcealed.
The truth within it is unambiguous and unconcealed.

Its path neither easy nor readily accessible.
Its way smooth and passable, not rugged and impregnable.

The most splendid of gifts, bounties, and blessings.
The most sublime endowments, glories and favors.

By his virtuous forefather Taha, master of the nations.
By the excellence of its owner, the best of nations.

So a breath of perfume is gifted from mouth to mouth.
And the scent of perfume spreads from mouth to mouth.
