بالشامin al-Sham منone whom لستI am not بناسforgetful لهof him
بلrather فيهin him ليfor me شغلa preoccupation عنaway from الناسpeople
In al-Sham is one whom I do not forget.
In Damascus I am not with people
Rather, he occupies me to the exclusion of others.
Rather I am busy apart from people
منfrom بعدهafter him اصبحتI became فيin وحشةloneliness
وكنتand I was فيin بشرgladness وايناسand companionship
In his absence, I have fallen into loneliness,
After it I found myself in solitude
though once I lived in gladness and companionship.
Though I used to be in cheer and companionship

So, O beloved, in whose absence I have spent my nights
Oh beloved you left after which
condemning the injustice of cruel time.
The cruel time oppressed

No pleasure remains for me since you have been gone,
After you I have no more pleasure
not even in melody or the cup.
Not even in melodies and wine

And your visitors said, when they saw
Your friends asked when they saw

Your house, where is the generous host

Where is the people's spring, if withering strikes
Where is the spring of people, if you call
the plants? And where is the steadfast mountain?
Vegetation and where is the firm mountain

للحرagainst the noble بالقسوةwith cruelty والباسand violence
It is the way of the days to rise up
It is the way of days to awake
against the noble with cruelty and violence.
Harshly to the free with might and violence

And blame and reproach fall on time's vicissitudes,
Blame and reproach are due to its caprice
and the noble bear no blame.
And the free have no blame
