فسر الهوى أولى واجدر بالحفظ

If concealing innermost secrets is wisdom,

If secrecy is wisdom

Then love's secret is more deserving and worthier of safekeeping.

The path of love deserves more care

وإن الذي تهوى لبيب فحسبه

وإن الذي تهوى لبيب فحسبه

إذا حضر الواشي الاشارة باللحظ

إذا حضر الواشي الاشارة باللحظ

And indeed, the one you love is discerning; all he needs,

The wise beloved knows a glance

When the talebearer is present, is a signal with a glance.

Conveys all when spies are there

تغير موضوع وخولف واضع

تغير موضوع وخولف واضع

فقد اصبح المعنى بعيداً عن اللفظ

فقد اصبح المعنى بعيداً عن اللفظ

What was established has changed, and its originator has been defied;

Let talk turn and twist away

For the meaning has become far removed from the wording.

Far from feelings once expressed

فكيف ونحن السابقون إلى الهوى

فكيف ونحن السابقون إلى الهوى

نسينا وامسى غيرنا وهو ذو حظ

نسينا وامسى غيرنا وهو ذو حظ

How then, though we were the first to love,

Since we loved before the rest

Have we been forgotten, while another now enjoys good fortune?

How could we forget our quest?

وقد كان في سير الحوادث واعظ

وقد كان في سير الحوادث واعظ

إذا نحن اصغينا المسامع للوعظ

إذا نحن اصغينا المسامع للوعظ

And indeed, in the course of events there was an admonisher,

Life itself has lessons taught

If we lent our ears to admonition.

If we but incline to hear

وان لساناً كان يلهج بالهوى

وان لساناً كان يلهج بالهوى

تبدّل من بث الصبابة باللحظ

تبدّل من بث الصبابة باللحظ

And indeed, a tongue that once spoke ceaselessly of love

A tongue that spoke of love will change

Has exchanged the outpouring of longing for a glance.

And babble but to smear
