تذكرhe recalled بالطفin al-Taff أوطانهhis native lands
تذكر بالطف أوطانه
فهاجand stirred لهfor him الشوقlonging أشجانهhis sorrows
فهاج له الشوق أشجانه
He recalled his native lands in al-Taff,
He recalled his homeland tenderly
And longing stirred his sorrows.
And longing stirred his innermost depths
فباتso he spent the night يكابدenduring ليلthe night of السليمone bitten by a snake
فبات يكابد ليل السليم
لاnot يألفknow الغمضsleep اجفانهhis eyelids
لا يألف الغمض اجفانه
So he endured a night like a snake-bitten man's;
He spent the still night sleepless
His eyelids know no sleep.
His eyes refused to close
يخالhe imagines النجومthe stars إذاwhen ماever (emphatic) سقيhe is given to drink
يخال النجوم إذا ما سقي
كؤوسcups الصبابةardent longing ندمانهhis drinking companions
كؤوس الصبابة ندمانه
He imagines the stars, whenever he is given
When he saw the stars, he imagined
Cups of ardent longing, to be his drinking companions.
The cups of youth passed round in vain
تنمtell tales الدموعthe tears علىof سرّهhis secret
تنم الدموع على سرّه
إذاwhen هوhe حالseeks كتمانهto conceal it
إذا هو حال كتمانه
Tears betray his secret
Tears flowed for his secret suffering
Whenever he seeks to conceal it.
When he tried to hide his state
لهfor him اللهGod صبّاًa lovelorn man بأرضin the land of الحجازthe Hijaz
له الله صبّاً بأرض الحجاز
يبكيhe weeps for العراقIraq وسكانهand its inhabitants
يبكي العراق وسكانه
God help him, lovelorn in the land of the Hijaz,
May God water the land of Hijaz with rain
Weeping for Iraq and its inhabitants.
